TWENTY2X, the new trade fair for digital technology, cannot take place in 2020 due to the increasingly critical situation surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year there will be no premiere of TWENTY2X, the B2B event for IT decision-makers from small and medium-sized companies in the DACH region. Comprehensive travel restrictions, bans on gatherings and curfews make planning and staging TWENTY2X impossible for organizers, exhibitors and visitors. Furthermore, it is not possible to predict how long these measures will last, since experts agree that the spread of the coronavirus will remain the dominant issue even in the summer months.

Human life and health are top priorities, but the corona crisis is also affecting most industries as well. Declining demand and sales are distressing the economy, resulting in supply bottlenecks, production stops and reduced working hours.

“Times of crisis call for a high level of responsibility, flexibility and pragmatic action. As operators of a global marketplace, we are now assuming this responsibility in the interest of our employees, customers and partners as well as the city of Hannover and the state of Lower Saxony. We will not stage TWENTY2X as planned in mid-June 2020,” said Dr. Andreas Gruchow, Member of the Managing Board, Deutsche Messe AG.

TWENTY2X will premiere from 9 to 11 March 2021 at the exhibition center in Hannover.

CEBIT Hannover to be cancelled

CEBIT topics related to industry will be integrated into HANNOVER MESSE

New events focused on digitalization in preparation

Hannover, Germany. Deutsche Messe announced on Wednesday in Hannover that it is streamlining its event portfolio: it will integrate CEBIT’s industry-related topics into HANNOVER MESSEwhile also developing additional CEBIT topics into specialist events for decision-makers from vertical industries. The realignment is due to reduced space bookings for CEBIT 2019.

Technological developments within the digital economy have reduced demand for horizontal tradeshows such as CEBIT in recent years. Digitalization’s innovative impact is particularly evident in the industrial application industries. As such, many of CEBIT’s traditional core exhibitors have turned to events targeting these industries to generate new business.

“In recent years, many discussions within the German industry have involved the thematic overlap between HANNOVER MESSE and CEBIT. It is now time to integrate the topics from CEBIT that are relevant for manufacturing, energy and logistics into HANNOVER MESSE ,” said Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG. “We are currently examining the digital market to determine which remaining CEBIT topics we will develop into new events.”

Deutsche Messe will cancel CEBIT 2019 because of declining visitor numbers and a continuing reduction in space bookings. The latest CEBIT concept consisted of an exhibition, conference and festival.

On 27 November, Oliver Frese, Deutsche Messe’s member of the managing board responsible for CEBIT, requested that the executive committee of Deutsche Messe’s supervisory board release him of his duties effective 31 December 2018. The committee agreed to his request. “We accept Mr. Frese’s decision with regret und respect. It is difficult to lose such an experienced tradeshow manager and board member. Frese has served Deutsche Messe for many years, most recently as the member of the managing board responsible for CEBIT,” said Bernd Althusmann, Economic Minister of Lower Saxony and Chairman of the Supervisory Board. “Especially with the new CEBIT concept, Frese showed courage, innovation and pioneering spirit. The further decline in demand for CEBIT is all the more regrettable, but at the same time, it shows that the CEBIT idea affected the entire economy. The topics it represented, such as digitization and artificial intelligence, are now seen as overarching tasks – which is also a success for CEBIT.”

Deutsche Messe does not expect direct effects from the streamlining, having already adjusted CEBIT’s role in and economic contribution to the events portfolio in recent years. “Thanks to many other strong events and strong growth in our international business, Deutsche Messe remains in a secure and solid position as a company,” said Köckler. Deutsche Messe will continue to use the CEBIT brand at events abroad.

Deutsche Messe AG

As one of the world’s foremost organizers of capital goods trade fairs, Deutsche Messe (Hannover, Germany) stages a rich array of events at venues in Germany and around the globe. With 2017 revenue projected to total about 357 million euros, Deutsche Messe ranks among Germany’s top five tradeshow producers. The company’s portfolio features such world-class events as (in alphabetical order) CeMAT (intralogistics and supply chain management), didacta (education), DOMOTEX (carpets and other floor coverings), HANNOVER MESSE (industrial technology), INTERSCHUTZ (fire prevention, disaster relief and safety & security), LABVOLUTION (lab technology) and LIGNA (woodworking, wood processing, forestry). The company also regularly hosts a number of internationally renowned events by third parties, among which are AGRITECHNICA (agricultural machinery) and EuroTier (animal production), both of which are staged by the German Agricultural Society (DLG), EMO (machine tools; staged by the German Machine Tool Builders’ Association, VDW), EuroBLECH (sheet metal working; staged by MackBrooks) and IAA Commercial Vehicles (transport, logistics and mobility; staged by the German Association of the Automotive Industry, VDA). With more than1,200 employees and a network of 58 sales partners, Deutsche Messe is present in more than100 countries.

Hanovre.

Can artificial intelligence (AI) help us to better recall our lives? At the upcoming CEBIT (11 to 15 June), memory researcher and legal psychologist Dr. Julia Shaw will report on her pioneering research at the interface of memory and AI, revealing how, in the future, it will be possible for us to remember lifetime events as long as we live.

Julia Shaw will speak on Wednesday, 13 June, at the CEBIT Artificial Intelligence Summit on the Grand Central Stage in Hall 27.

In the following advance interview, she explains how human memory can be manipulated and how artificial intelligence can be used to expand human memory.

1. What do you need to hack into someone’s memory? And how easily can this happen?

It is amazingly easy to manipulate memories and persuade someone that he or she has seen or done something that never actually happened. All you need is the trust of the person in question, false information (e.g. suggesting a fictitious course of past events) and the imaginative power of the person involved. Because our brains are so flexible and creative, they can knit together plausible stories from just a few bits of information and convince themselves that it is actually a case of genuine experience.

2. What are the major advantages and hazards of this type of memory intervention?

We need to be vigilant and careful that outside parties – be they news sources, authority figures or trusted individuals such as family members or friends – do not manipulate our memory, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Other people can dramatically change our perceptions of reality. This can affect our own self-image, our consumer habits and even our voting behavior. The idea that people could base important decisions on a past that never happened is frightening.

False memories – that sounds like a flaw at first, a faulty design of the brain. But that is not the case. False memories are a wonderful byproduct of the same systems that are responsible for creativity, intelligence and problem solving. Our brain is not made to remember the past with complete attention to detail. Our brain is designed for something much greater, i.e. the capacity to think abstractly and with suppleness. False memories are just the result of this amazing flexibility of our brain.

3. Can artificial intelligence expand human memory capacity in the relatively near future or even replace it entirely?

Yes, I believe that AI can expand and replace certain aspects of human memory capabilities. For experiences that could later become significant – for instance, witnessing a crime or undergoing other extremely stressful life experiences – it is important to keep a record of them. This is the best defense against memory hacking. People tend to overestimate their memory capacity. Here it can be helpful to record your impressions while they are still fresh in mind. That’s why my latest research is using AI to create scalable practical memory tools that can record important life events. My first application, SPOT (talktospot.com), is designed to help people remember details involving harassment and discrimination in the workplace. My goal is a future in which we combine memory theory and AI to create a better working environment. In my opinion, this is where the next cognitive revolution will take place. If we are aware of the limits of our brains and can replace the corresponding processes with technology, we will have taken a decisive step forward.

The new CEBIT presents the trend technologies that are driving the digital transformation forward. Part 2 of the Preview is about future mobility, security, collaboration & Workspace 4.0, blockchain, eGovernment, augmented & virtual reality and influencer marketing.
New ideas for the mobility of the future

The new CEBIT area Future Mobility exhibits pioneering concepts for digital mobility. Volkswagen has announced “a festival of innovations” for CEBIT – from a test project with blockchain support to artificial intelligence in business to data-based traffic optimization in large cities. “The highlight will be a four-wheeled world premiere autonomous driving concept,” said Jonas Kulawik, IT Spokesperson, Global Group Communications, Volkswagen, at the Preview in Hannover, Germany (Hall 25, Stand A23; open-air site Q60).

IONITY wants to set up a pan-European high-power charging network for electric vehicles, a joint venture from carmakers BMW, Daimler, Ford and the Volkswagen group. Charging stations with output of up to 350 kW will provide convenient rapid charging along major highways in 18 countries. CEBIT visitors can use virtual reality to dive into the world of eMobility, and admire the futuristic design of the first charging station prototypes (Hall 25, Stand B48).

To prevent emissions, traffic jams and parking headaches, there are plans to supplement urban public transportation systems with shared electric taxis. e.GO Mobile is presenting the e.GO Mover electric minibus and the e.GO Life city car at CEBIT. “The e.GO Mover for 14 passengers is designed for on-demand service and supports highly automated driving,” reported e.Go co-founder Mathias Kreimeier at the Preview (Hall 25, Stand A27).

Deutsche Bahn wants to win over 50 million more passengers to long-distance travel by 2030 – without laying down any new track. At CEBIT, visitors can discover how they plan to do this. Also being introduced at the fair is the smart platform edge that indicates where the doors will be before a train arrives. And the first games in the 2018 World Cup will be broadcast in a public viewing section of a future regional train (Hall 25, Stand A37).

CEBIT has formed a long-term partnership with the ADAC German automobile club. “‘We’re evolving the club from a highway assistance to a mobility assistance service,” says ADAC President Dr. August Markl, “and these changes will be presented at CEBIT.” As the Community Captain for startup platform scale11, the club plays host to young mobility companies. There is also a pitch session for innovative business ideas (Hall 27/scale11 and Hall 25, Stand B27).

Concepts for tomorrow’s working world

It is not just mobility that is changing with breathtaking speed, but also the world of work. AMAGNO is showcasing a revolutionary Living Documents technology at CEBIT, that lets you surf through documents as if they were webpages. By clicking an order number, file reference or name, users can view additional files, scanned documents and e-mails related to any process or case (Hall 14, Stand H20).

The Smart City by Ricoh gives hands-on access to the Workplace 4.0, with space for exciting and inspiring expert keynotes on trending topics in business. The City is featuers seven real-world examples of core aspects of the digitally transformed world of work: data security, digital workflow, mobile solutions, co-working, technological innovations, environmental protection and digitization consulting (Technology Academy, Pavilion 36).

ATOS accompanies the digital transformation of customers from a wide range of industries worldwide. At CEBIT the company shows how a future project manager will do their work, using concrete examples and live demos. Big Data and artificial intelligence are key factors (Hall 13, Stand C74 and open-air site M59).

LG Electronics is displaying its cloud monitors for the first time in Europe. These make it easy to set up quick and convenient workspaces almost anywhere. To give employees access to the necessary data from their company network, the cloud serves as storage to make all programs and services available – as well as additional computing power where needed (Hall 13, Stand D122).

DATEV is using a digital experience pathway to demonstrate at CEBIT what digitization of everyday processes in every company means. Various development stages are also visualized – from founding to successful market entry. Topics include digital bookkeeping, mobile applications for the business environment and eCommerce solutions (Hall 17, Stand F06).

A crash test for web apps and the potential of the blockchain

Ever more work processes are carried out online these days, which means that large volumes of sensitive data must be protected from outside attacks. This is the focus of the startup Crashtest Security, nominated for the CEBIT Innovation Award 2018: The Crashtest Security Suite offers comprehensive security testing for programs in the web (Hall 27, Stand F82).

Of course, cool blockchain startups are also at CEBIT. eCoin Investment has specialized in solutions to easily find your way in the world of cryptocurrencies, and develops high quality mining systems. At CEBIT the company is presenting a selection of its products, showing how to earn money with Bitcoin and its sister currencies, and testing visitors’ crypto-knowledge (Hall 12, Stand B36/1).

Citizen project with blockchain and trends in eGovernment

Promising new concepts also abound in the eGovernment sector. At the Preview, Materna presented its Citizen Blockchain project, planned as a CEBIT Showcase with a fine particulates map. This project will allow people to share data from privately operated air quality measurement stations, and earn blockchain tokens. Municipal partners are still being sought at CEBIT (Hall 15, Stand G54).

The kommune.digital initiative is exhibiting for the first time at CEBIT. Municipal elected officials and other decision-makers can experience new concepts and innovative solutions for tomorrow’s networked cities. Numerous exhibitors are showcasing applications that enable integrated, sustainable digitization (Hall 14, Stand L35).

Augmented & virtual reality for live events of all kinds

The startup VRTX Labs is demonstrating how a visit to CEBIT in 2020 might look, using an augmented & virtual reality app for interactive real-time visualization. In the future, a glance at a smartphone will be enough to call up an explanatory video for an exhibit or hook into the in-hall events program. Real-life experience is enhanced with playful features that invite users to discover the virtual tradeshow world (Hall 27, Stand B23/4).

Influencer marketing trends and entertainment at d!campus

These days many companies want to take advantage of influencers. With CEBIT!signals, Deutsche Messe and blogfoster are presenting Europe’s largest influencer marketing event. More than 1,000 bloggers are expected for Digital Friday (15 June). A program highlight: “From online promotion to YouTube star: How to build a brand with two million followers without investing a penny in advertising” (Keynote with Alexander Giesecke and Nicolai Schork, Managing Directors, TheSimpleCub; Hall 27).

Even a big business festival should include plenty of fun. That’s why, next to the SAP ferris wheel in more than 250 square meters of open-air site, SILPION IT-Solutions is hosting a foosball arena. The goals are fun, relaxation… and networking. Because the new CEBIT on 11–15 June is not just a premium business event, but a festival for everyone!

Hannover’s downtown will soon be grooving to the CEBIT beat, thanks to a bright array of off-site events designed to highlight and celebrate the digital lifestyle. “Together with several partners, we are taking CEBIT’s upbeat spirit and themes to the pedestrian streets of downtown Hannover. CEBIT and the City of Hannover are inextricably linked,” remarked Oliver Frese, the Deutsche Messe Managing Board member in charge of CEBIT.
Hannover business association City-Gemeinschaft to stage a Digital Coffee Break at the heart of the city (Kröpke Square)
Downtown dancing and partying to the beat of CEBIT

Digitization is profoundly changing the way people live, socialize and interact with the world. The major opportunities and challenges it brings will be explored at the Digital Coffee Break to be staged on Kröpcke Square, at the d!lounge hosted by Deutsche Messe and Hannover’s newspaper Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung (HAZ). There, moderator Jan Sedelis and a panel of guests will address a variety of important questions, including: What new professions are sprouting up around digitization, and what existing professions are being transformed in the process? How can we keep our personal digital information secure for the long run? How can children and young adults safely interact on social networks?

Hannover’s City-Gemeinschaft business association and Deutsche Messe will officially open the d!lounge on Sunday, 10 June. Starting on Monday, 11 June, the daily Digital Coffee Break – a moderated panel discussion – will be held every day at 3 p.m. People will be able to drop in, help themselves to some coffee and cake and be part of the discussion. Throughout the day, passers-by can catch live streams of the CEBIT d!talk conferences as shown on big screens at Kröpke Square.

Thursday night is CEBIT Club Night, when Hannover will come alive with pusating dance beats. The event is being staged at the stunning historic Cumberlandsche Galerie venue by Der Rote Salon in collaboration with Hannover Unesco City of Music, and will provide living proof that digital technology is also very much a mainstay of the modern dance scene.

Last but definitely not least, the all-new CEBIT will end in style on Friday, 15 June, with a star-studded downtown concert starting at 6 p.m. on Kröpke Square. British pop and soul singer Emma Lanford will get the beat started, followed by the band MUNIQUE and British singer-songwriter Tom Gregory. At 9 p.m. the stage will be taken by a surprise act whose identity will only be revealed shortly beforehand.

This year’s Hannover inner-city event program is the fruit of close collaboration between Deutsche Messe and Hannover’s City-Gemeinschaft business association. “We are delighted at the association’s enthusiastic and extensive role in making this ambitious program come to life. The parallel staging of CEBIT at the exhibition center and the various activities in downtown Hannover will no doubt bring back some of that Expo 2000 spirit we all so fondly remember,” commented Frese.

Please Note: The d!lounge on Hannover’s Kröpcke Square will be officially opened – with photo ops – on 10 June at 1:30 p.m.

CEBIT 2018

Welcome to the all-new CEBIT! In June of 2018, Europe’s brand-new business festival for digitization and innovation is taking front and center stage. Its four constituent parts will provide full, in-depth coverage of every aspect of digital technology and its implications for enterprises, economies and society in general. d!conomy will empower the business community and the public sector to meet the challenges of and fully leverage the rich opportunities offered by digitization. At d!tec, the spotlight is on startups and their disruptive business models, as well as on research institutes preparing to give us a glimpse of tomorrow’s game-changing technologies. The d!talk stage program will feature a highly inspirational mix of visionaries, unconventional thinkers, creative wizards and experts from around the globe. The centrally located d!campus will be the pulsating heart of the event – the place where everyone gets together for relaxed networking, street food and live music. The first day of CEBIT 2018 – Monday, 11 June – is reserved for conference attendees and journalists, with the exhibition opening on Tuesday, 12 June. The exhibition halls will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the d!campus staying open till 11 p.m. on those days. Opening hours on Friday are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Experts are already calling blockchain technology the next big thing, with the potential to revolutionize the way we do business. At the upcoming CEBIT (11 to 15 June), participants will reveal the business scenarios that have already become a reality, along with the latest concepts for the future.

Nerds, analysts and economists are all unanimous in rating the blockchain as an economic breakthrough. But what is actually behind the term “blockchain”, and why is this new technology such a game changer for our global economy? Every blockchain is essentially a ledger for a chain of digital transactions. Because all processes are stored in a decentralized, distributed fashion on millions of computers on the Web, the technology is considered highly secure, especially due to the prevention of any retroactive interventions or deletion processes.

Opportunities for automation and enhanced efficiency

The blockchain offers extraordinary opportunities for businesses to automate their processes and boost efficiency. The focus is on mapping business transactions that require the highest degree of confidence, predictability and transparency – from concluding contracts and sharing consumer goods (for example, car sharing) to transacting payments via cryptocurrencies like bitcoin or Ethereum. At the moment, digital currencies that may someday take the place of the so-called fiat currencies are the best-known use cases for the blockchain.

But experts also see a considerable potential for smart contracts – for instance, when renting out properties: If a tenant has transferred his deposit and wants to move in, he could automatically receive a digital key for the electronic lock on the apartment door without the landlord or any other party needing to take any action. The blockchain is also ideally suited for secure data transfer on the Internet of Things or for trading in renewable energies, which are fed into the network by local producers. Completely different areas of application are also conceivable: With texts, images or videos, for example, you can prove the origin and the processing steps if the corresponding data is documented in a blockchain – an effective tool in the battle against fake news.

Practical showcases, courtesy of IBM, Materna, SAP et al.

At Europe’s business festival for innovation and digitization, the blockchain is a key theme which will be highlighted in many different places. For example, at IBM. “In the digital economy, trust is more important than ever,” explains Matthias K. Hartmann, CEO of IBM Germany. “Using the blockchain, we can digitally map, track and exchange almost anything of value – without requiring a centralized control point.”

At CEBIT, IBM will be presenting what it says is the first commercial blockchain platform to be offered in the form of a software-as-a-service solution. To this end, the company is highlighting customer projects from a several different sectors. Working in tandem with logistics provider Maersk, IBM is developing a digital platform for global trade to ensure greater transparency in freight transport across national borders. Interested parties will also learn how other technologies – such as the Internet of Things – can be connected using the blockchain (open-air site, pavilion P34/35).

SAP is also demonstrating the innovative power of the blockchain with a logistics concept – an interactive touchscreen demo illustrating the emergence of a smoothie based on fair trade practices. Linked 3-D elements can be used to follow how the blockchain is revolutionizing digital supply chains. The showcase is intended to illustrate how the origin control system ensures security and increases efficiency (Hall 27, open-air site, pavilion P44).

Materna’s Citizen Blockchain project demonstrates how public administration can benefit from blockchain technology: In the future, citizens will be able to provide data from privately operated air measuring stations in return for digital tokens for a permanently updated fine dust map; these can be managed via app and redeemed online. Materna is looking for municipalities, districts and countries which are interested in participating in the project (Hall 15, Stand G54).

Mach AG (Hall 14, Stand H 58) is also providing information on the blockchain. At the “Future Technologies” camp, CEBIT visitors can witness the potential added value for their organizations which new technologies like augmented reality, artificial intelligence and the blockchain can provide. Special highlights include daily showcases for the use of augmented reality in connection with eFiles or the application of artificial intelligence in the context of document capture. In addition, MACH experts will be encouraging idea-sharing for blockchain use cases, for instance the management of processes and finances in public administration.

A CEBIT showcase at DXC Technology combines the megatrends of robotics and the blockchain: On the open-air site, you can watch a robot at work mixing drinks and receiving orders via a blockchain-based order chain. A marketplace for the monetization of data will also be on display (open-air site, Stand R62).

eCoin Investment specializes in solutions for easy access to the world of cryptocurrencies, including high-quality mining systems for carrying out transactions with bitcoin et al. At CEBIT, the company will present a cross-section of its products while featuring live mining and testing the crypto-knowledge of its visitors (Hall 12, Stand B36/1).

PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) plans to make the emerging Internet of Values directly tangible with its Blockchain Xperience on Friday, 15 June on the Expert Stage in Hall 12, where visitors will get to know how the technology works throughout the day, in one-hour simulations by becoming part of a blockchain themselves.

Also on Friday, 15 June, the CEBIT Blockchain Summit will take place in Hall 12 on the Center Stage, featuring top-class experts. The opening keynote speech will be held by Prof. Wolfgang Prinz, Vice Chairman of Fraunhofer FIT. Further lectures with a number of real-life practical examples will be given by Sebastian Epple, IBM DACH blockchain leader, Dr. Friederike Ernst, Secretary General of the German Blockchain Association, Dinko Eror, General Manager of Dell EMC Germany, Sven Korschinowski, partner of the auditing firm KPMG and consultant for corporations, banks and fintech start-ups, Kaales Lardi, Managing Partner at Lardi & Partner Consulting.

The new CEBIT is Europe’s leading event for startups. And it’s all down to scale11, a highly successful showcase for founders and entrepreneurs. scale11 is a springboard for hip and creative new business ideas from Germany and around the world. Held in Hall 27 this June, it will give more than 350 young enterprises from 40 nations the opportunity to network with market incumbents, investors and other lateral thinkers.

Almost every day, it seems, young entrepreneurs are coming up with innovative ideas with the potential to disrupt classic business models in all kinds of sectors, whether finance, energy, health or retail. And yet, according to a recent industry study, 65 percent of German firms with 20 or more employees still do not have any kind of partnership with startups, and only 8 percent provide capital to startups.

BVDS fostering cooperation between established corporations and startups

To remedy this situation, the German Startups Association (BVDS) – one of the partners of CEBIT’s scale11 platform – recently established the Digital Germany Council (Kuratorium Digitales Deutschland), a body of experts from government, science and business tasked with facilitating and enhancing cooperation between startups, SMEs and global corporations. “One thing we’ve found again and again over the five years we have been operating is that startups are heavily dependent on market incumbents, particularly during their growth phase,” explains BVDS Chairman Florian Nöll. “But we also see the converse – traditional market participants benefitting from the innovative perspective provided by startups.

More and more startups from Germany

The good news is, the number of German startups making a big splash on the market is rising. To quote a recent analysis undertaken for the German government by the country’s Institute for Innovation and Technology (iit): “Successful German startup numbers have now reached a level that is comparable with what is happening in the USA, the UK and Israel.” Moreover, the 2017 German Startup Monitor published by the BVDS shows that 8 out of 10 German startups have plans for international expansion. The focus of these plans is for the most part on other EU countries. The problem is that many of these startups drop out of the running due to a lack of access to capital. To help counter this, the European Commission recently launched VentureEU, a €2.1 billion fund-of-funds program that will back VC funds around Europe and thereby boost support for startups.

CEBIT scale11 a powerful springboard for entrepreneurs

But first things first: startups and scaleups seeking to woo investors, partners and the media need well managed public events to boost their profile. That’s where the CEBIT show’s scale11 platform comes in. It is Europe’s leading springboard for startups hungry for success – and hence also a major magnet for those seeking to share in that success. In Hall 27 at CEBIT, prospective investors and partners will find an absolute wealth of visionary business ideas. For example, the founders of INS will be at this year’s scale11 with the world’s first millimeter-accurate AR-based indoor navigation system that does not require any additional hardware. NEPOS will be presenting the world’s first tablet for the 60-plus generation that features a universal user interface for all programs. EmQopter will be there with an autonomous delivery drone that has a gripper arm and features intelligent collision avoidance technology. And Sensosurf will be showcasing self-learning machine components for industrial processes.

As well as these “German-made” innovations, there will be plenty of brilliant business ideas for other parts of the world. GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation), for instance, will be bringing 20 startups from Kenya, Nigeria and Tunisia to Hannover as part of its Make IT in Africa initiative, and KIC-Europe (Korea Innovation Centre Europe) will be there with seven founder teams from South Korea.

Big players on the look-out for new ideas

CEBIT premium partners ADAC and Volkswagen have announced they will be running startup pitches and many other activities at scale11. Deutsche Bank will also be there. The bank is looking to partner with startups to develop new products and will be using scale11 to present its dbAPI interface, which can be used for developing services such as open banking.

Group pavilions featuring young enterprises

Several startups will be taking part at a group pavilion in Hall 27 organized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). For example, accu:rate will be presenting crowd:it, a software application that uses crowd simulation to improve crowd safety in public places; and rfrnz will be profiling a contract intelligence platform that uses AI to analyze and review contracts.

Several of Germany’s federal states, including Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, will likewise be organizing startup-focused group pavilions in Hall 27. Regional initiatives such as Hannover’s business development agency hannoverimpuls will also be there with a selection of young hopefuls. Other big-name cooperation partners of scale11 include the German venture capital firm High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), the co-working space Hafven Hannover, and the startup incubator and accelerator STARTPLATZ Düsseldorf/Köln.

Expert panels, live action and networking with a festival atmosphere

The show will also feature various other exciting startup-centric events and formats, including the scale11 startup stage with its live pitches, as well as various panel discussions, community areas and business speed-dating sessions. For example, on the Expert Stage, the BVDS will be running information and discussion events starring noted representatives from the startup scene, influencers, investors and political leaders.

One of the big scale11 highlights for startups will be the Meet-a-Media sessions. Run as 30-minute speed-dating slots, these sessions are an opportunity for startups to chat with journalists and get first-hand advice on how to improve their media presence (cooperation partner: Becomewide). And for young women entrepreneurs, there’s the Founders’ Breakfast in the scale11 Lounge on 13 June.

scale11 would not be scale11 without the ever-popular “Fuckup Nights”. Held on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 June, these are an opportunity for young entrepreneurs to talk about their failures and the reasons for them and to give other budding entrepreneurs a few pointers on how to deal with difficult situations.

And for those entrepreneurs who feel equal to a public duel of words with their peers, there’s the Founders Fight Club. Each round will be scored by a jury of experts. Every evening, once the Fights and other scale11 activities are over, it’s time to head out to the d!campus for some R&R amid a relaxing festival atmosphere.

Promising startups as finalists for CEBIT Innovation Award

Three highly promising startups have been nominated for the CEBIT Innovation Award 2018. They are: AIPARK, which uses big traffic data and AI to help drivers find parking spaces; Crashtest Security, which has developed a suite of web application security software; and Fire & Rescue Instructions, whose DIVERA 24/7 real-time visualization software streamlines emergency response planning for fire and rescue services. The three finalists will be at the German Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF) pavilion at Stand E52 in Hall 27.

The new, revamped CEBIT kicks off on Monday, 11 June, with an action-packed, star-studded conference program. That’s right: the exhibition halls don’t actually open to visitors until the Tuesday, but there will be plenty happening on Take-off Monday with a top-notch digitization-themed program that includes an array of speaking events in the conference area of Hall 19, plus the Welcome Night evening event in Hall 11.

Opening with VR legend Jaron Lanier

The first highlight of the day will come when Jaron Lanier gives the Take-off Monday keynote address. Lanier is the barefoot philosopher of the digital world, known both as a pioneer of virtual reality and one of the fiercest critics of the Internet. He is an American computer scientist, entrepreneur, composer and author. Currently a scientist at Microsoft Research, his fundamental criticism of the business models of the world’s major Internet companies won him the 2014 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.

Future Work Forum

The keynote will be followed by the Future Work Forum, which will discuss ways of harnessing the opportunities of digitization for business and work and allaying fears about job losses and de-skilling in the workforce. The Forum speakers include Christiane Benner, Second Chairperson of Germany’s IG Metall trade union, and Dr. Dieter Spath, President of Germany’s National Academy of Science and Technology (acatech) and Co-Chair of the academy’s Learning Systems platform.

Who benefits from digitization?

Another key part of the Take-off Monday program is the CEBIT Executive Talk. This event will be devoted the question as to how today’s increasingly powerful digital technologies can be used to deliver economic growth and prosperity and strengthen social cohesion. The speaker lineup includes Federation of German Industries (BDI) President Dr. Dieter Kempf, Fraunhofer Society President Dr. Reimund Neugebauer, and Accenture GmbH Chairman Frank Riemensperger.

Additional digitization-themed forums and discussion events featuring big-name representatives from business and government are in the pipeline.

CEBIT Monday: how to participate

To participate at the Take-off Monday conferences, you must have a valid full-event CEBIT ticket. You also need to register for each individual Take-off Monday event that you want to take part in. Registration is via the CEBIT website at www.cebit.de and opens at the start of March.

Participation in the CEBIT Welcome Night at 6 p.m. in Hall 11 is by invitation only.

Important note: The exhibition halls and the d!campus do not open until Tuesday, 12 June.

We live in a brave new world where health apps collect data about our bodies and fitness, operations are streamed live around the globe and doctors’ appointments are made online. Digital health solutions pose a whole set of new challenges to the health system. The d!talk healthcare conference at CEBIT 2018 (13. June 2018, 10.30 – 15.30 h) will explore these challenges and their ramifications for patients and doctors in the course of its comprehensive lecture program.

  • d!talk healthcare conference a window on the future of medicine

  • lecture program covers key trends in the healthcare sector

Many speakers have already confirmed their participation, among them Axel Wehmeier, spokesperson for the Management Board of Deutsche Telekom Healthcare and Security Solutions, whose keynote will focus on “Connectivity”.

This year’s d!talk healthcare conference on Digital Health explores the impacts of digitization on the healthcare sector as well as state-of-the-art ICT applications and their ability to optimize healthcare service delivery. According to a survey by German ICT association BITKOM and Bayrische TelemedAllianz (BTA), around 45% of German smartphone owners use health apps to monitor and record body and fitness related data. Germans are also increasingly requesting digital versions of their patient information. 32% of respondents had already received test results on CD-ROM, while 43% stated that they would prefer to receive their test results in digital form in the future.

Even so, the market for digital health applications is still largely impenetrable for health-sector stakeholders, be they end users, health insurance providers, health professionals or medical companies. This is due to the sheer number of solutions on offer and the highly dynamic nature of the market, which is characterized by continual comings and goings of new products, services and functionality. Reservations about the adequacy of data protection are another factor, with some 74% of Germans calling for the right to have a say in how their digital medical data are processed and used.

“Digitization is poised to transform medical science and clinical practice in a way that is nothing short of revolutionary,” commented Dr. Matthias P. Schönermark, M.D., as the Managing Director of SKC Beratungsgesellschaft mbH, a partner of this year’s d!talk healthcare conference. “That said, healthcare is a relatively conservative sector, so it lags somewhat behind others, such as the consumer goods, retail or finance sectors,” he added. “But that puts healthcare in the highly advantageous position of being able to avoid the mistakes made in other sectors while at the same time using the new digital realities of those sectors as models and sources of inspiration. With its new, unique approach, CEBIT enables visitors to take stock of all aspects of digital health in a single day. Where are we now? What are the options for digitization in the healthcare sector and where are we headed? What can we learn from others? What does digital healthcare actually look like? In terms of sheer focus and breadth of coverage of digital health themes, no event even comes close to the new CEBIT with its d!talk healthcare conference on 13 June 2018.”

The d!talk healthcare conference at CEBIT 2018 will explore digital health from every angle. The conference’s supporting partners are the German ICT association BITKOM, Gesundheitswirtschaft Hannover e. V., medcon & more GmbH and SKC Beratungsgesellschaft mbH. The conference is where speakers, decision makers and influencers from the digital healthcare and health insurance sectors will meet for quality discussion and networking.

Confirmed speakers to date:

  • Dr. Axel Wehmeier, spokesperson for the Management Board of Deutsche Telekom Healthcare and Security Solutions: “Connectivity”
  • Dr. Werner Eberhardt, Chief Product Officer, SAP Connect Health: “Big Data and Analytics”
  • Dr. Daniel Sonntag, Principal Researcher and Research Fellow, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) Saarbrücken, Editor-in-Chief of Cognitive Technologies and the German Journal on Artificial Intelligence: “Artificial Intelligence”
  • Dr. Markus Fischmann, Professor for Animation and VFX, Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HsH), Director of the Institute for Digital Media (idm), Co-founder of digitalfish GmbH: “Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality”
  • Dr. Jens Baas, Chairman of the Executive Board, “Die Techniker Krankenkasse” health insurance fund: “Electronic Medical Records as the Core of Digital Integration”
  • Sebastian Pitzler, Managing Director, Insurlab Germany e. V.: “The Future of (Health) Insurance in the Digital Age”
  • Siegmar Nesch, Deputy Chairman of the Board, AOK Baden-Württemberg health insurance fund: “Digital Transformation: The AOK Baden-Württemberg Use Case”
  • Dusty Majumdar PhD, VP and Chief Marketing Officer, IBM Watson Health and IBM Healthcare and Life Sciences: “Does Cognitive Computing disrupt Healthcare as we know it?”

Registration for the d!talk healthcare conference opens in mid-February.
