The world of industry will not be able to meet in Hannover this year. Comprehensive travel restrictions, bans on group gatherings and a prohibition decree in the Hannover region make it impossible to stage HANNOVER MESSE. At the same time, the corona crisis is affecting the economy, and the manufacturing industry – HANNOVER MESSE’s core clientele – is already struggling with serious consequences of the pandemic. Demand and sales in German industry are declining, resulting in supply bottlenecks, production stops and reduced working hours for employees.

“Given the dynamic development around Covid-19 and the extensive restrictions on public and economic life, HANNOVER MESSE cannot take place this year,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Board of Management, Deutsche Messe AG. “Our exhibitors, partners and our entire team did everything they could to make it happen, but today we have to accept that in 2020 it will not be possible to host the world’s most important industrial event.”

It is the first time in HANNOVER MESSE’s 73-year history that the event will not take place. However, the organizers will not let the show completely vanish. “The need for orientation and exchange is particularly important in times of crisis,” says Köckler. “That is why we are currently working intensely on a digital information and networking plattform for HANNOVER MESSE that we will open to our customers shortly.”

Various web-based formats will enable HANNOVER MESSE exhibitors and visitors to exchange information about upcoming economic policy challenges and technological solutions. Live streams will transport interactive expert interviews, panel discussions and best-case presentations all over the world. The online exhibitor and product search is also being enhanced, for example with a function that enables visitors and exhibitors to contact each other directly.

“We firmly believe that nothing can replace direct, person-to-person contact and we are already looking forward to the time after Corona,” says Köckler. “But especially in times of crisis, we must be flexible and act pragmatically. As organizers of the world’s most important industrial trade fair, we want to offer orientation and sustain economic life during the crisis. We are doing that with our new digital offering.”

Thilo Brodtmann, executive director of Germany’s Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), said, “The cancellation of HANNOVER MESSE 2020 is an unfortunate decision, but it is the only correct one. The mechanical engineering industry must now concentrate on minimizing the consequences of the pandemic in its own operations so that it can start up again. In April 2021, the engineers will be back in Hannover in full force.”

Wolfgang Weber, Chairman of the ZVEI Management Board: “The fact that Hannover Messe 2020 cannot be hosted is a bitter loss, but it is the right decision. For the electrical industry, the fair is the showcase to the world, which unfortunately remains closed this year. So our companies will use the time until 2021 to manage the considerable consequences of Corona. Next year, they will then present themselves with the latest products and solutions for Industry 4.0 and the energy system of the future.”

eutsche Messe made the decision to postpone HANNOVER MESSE 2020 to July 2020 in close cooperation with the Hannover Region Health Authority, the HANNOVER MESSE Exhibitors’ Council and the partner associations VDMA (German Engineering Federation) and ZVEI (German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association).

The Hannover Region Health Authority had strongly recommended that Deutsche Messe follow the advice of the Robert Koch Institute, which includes comprehensive measures to safeguard health when hosting major events. For instance, fever measuring stations at all entrances and not allowing people from risk areas or those who have had contact with people from risk areas to enter the exhibition center. This would have entailed a comprehensive evaluation of all trade fair participants – from exhibitors and visitors to service providers, exhibit builders and catering companies.

Deutsche Messe is unable to implement the proposed measures. In addition, their implementation would impair the staging of the event to such an extent that the event would not fulfill its purpose or would do so only with considerable restrictions for exhibitors and visitors.

Since the health of exhibitors, visitors, employees, and the public is the top priority for Deutsche Messe, the decision was made in consultation with HANNOVER MESSE’s exhibitor advisory councils to switch to the July date.

“With the July date, we offer our exhibitors the earliest possible time slot to present their innovations to a global audience and to initiate business,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Deutsche Messe AG. “In view of the global economic challenges triggered by the Coronavirus in the first half of the year, the new date offers great opportunities. Thus the world’s most important industrial trade fair can provide important impetus for the global economy at an early stage.”

“The VDMA supports the decision of Deutsche Messe AG. In regards to the current challenges caused by the Coronavirus, postponing HANNOVER MESSE until July is the best possible option,” says VDMA Chief Executive Thilo Brodtmann. “We assume that the situation will calm down in the coming months and that the mechanical engineering industry will then benefit from a reviving business situation.”

“Today’s decision by Deutsche Messe AG to postpone HANNOVER MESSE comes at the right time,” emphasizes Wolfgang Weber, Chairman of the ZVEI Management Board. “As an internationally important industrial trade show, its USP is the gathering of people from all over the world. This can only happen if there are no health risks. Hannover. Modular production technology is now sufficiently mature to be released onto the market. Visitors at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 will be able to witness this for themselves at the “Process INDUSTRY 4.0: The Age of Modular Production” showcase in Hall 11. The showcase will feature exhibits and live demonstrations that highlight a particularly fast and efficient way of engineering modules (encapsulated, self-contained production units with their own automation and control intelligence) based on MTP (Module Type Package), a standardized “language” that provides a digital description of the individual modules. With MTP, process manufacturers can integrate modules of any make via orchestration systems to create highly flexible, modular production plants. “This makes it possible to build and reconfigure process plants very quickly, as and when required,” explains Axel Haller (ABB), chair of the ZVEI Modular Automation working group. “This gives companies the flexibility to respond to changing market requirements while significantly reducing the engineering overhead involved.”

The “Process INDUSTRY 4.0: The Age of Modular Production” showcase is co-organized by the industry associations IPSE, NAMUR, ProcessNet (a joint initiative by DECHEMA and VDI), VDMA and ZVEI, with support from various companies, including ABB, B&R, Emerson, Endress+Hauser, Festo, HIMA, Pepperl + Fuchs, Phoenix Contact, Samson, Siemens, Wago and Yokogawa. NAMUR (User Association of Automation Technology in Process Industries)

MTP facilitates the integration of modular process units into higher-level control systems by encapsulating complexity, thereby making it easier to deal with, and by increasing flexibility without pushing up overheads. “NAMUR has absolutely no doubt that this approach will transform the world of automation,” says NAMUR CEO Heinrich Engelhard. NAMUR spearheads a number of working groups that are developing MTP-based approaches to modular production. At HANNOVER MESSES, these groups, made up of automation technology providers and users, will report on the current status of their development work. They have already conducted some initial pilot projects which demonstrate to impressive effect the benefits of this modular production approach in terms of reducing engineering overhead and boosting ease and flexibility of modification.

ISPE (International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering)

Pharmaceuticals manufacturers need to digitize their production documentation in order to comply with various regulatory requirements, including data integrity requirements. “The main challenge is to ensure that validated quality-relevant process data is made available for digitized documentation processes and archived for future audits,” says Wolfgang Dedden, Co-Chair of the ISPE Plug & Produce working group. “By collaborating with NAMUR, we aim to ensure that new approaches, such as MTP and NOA, are available to pharmaceuticals manufacturers in usable form right from the outset, so that we can achieve security of investment for both module suppliers and module operators.”

ProcessNet

“With components for modular automation now available on the market, it is now possible to realize the first modular production plants in chemicals and pharmaceuticals process manufacturing. We urgently need modular production, so that we can respond quickly and flexibly to market requirements,” said Dr. Frank Stenger, Chair of the Modular Plants working group at ProcessNet . Modular plant designs and associated automation and process control strategies are a key focus of the process engineering community at ProcessNet.

VDMA (German Engineering Federation)

By combining and interconnecting modular production units via MPT, it is now possible to design, configure and modify production plants much faster and more simply than has previously been the case. “This opens up a wealth of new possibilities for equipment manufacturers,” explains Richard Clemens, CEO of the Process Plant and Equipment Association within the VDMA . For plant manufacturers, this trend from stand-alone items of equipment towards integrated systems is not fundamentally new. But the methodology is new. Standardization of interfaces between production modules promises to greatly simplify business processes in industry and open up new areas of business.

Organized by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, this event will create the basis for a profitable dialogue on the importance of lightweight design and engineering, examine the current competitive situation and explore strategies aimed at promoting this key technology.

Hannover. The 1st Lightweighting Summit will focus on the importance of lightweight engineering in the context of digitization and globalization. “Lightweight engineering is a strong innovation-driver which can contribute to enhanced resource and energy efficiency,” says Federal Economics Minister Peter Altmaier. “This is equally important for environmental and climate protection, as well as for strengthening Germany’s competitiveness as an industrial location. Lightweight engineering has an important role to play in mastering global challenges.” In his role as the summit’s patron, Altmaier will welcome the visitors at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, 2 April. Introductory speeches will also be delivered by Dr. Michael Meister, Parliamentary Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research , and Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) has organized this decision-makers’ forum in collaboration with Deutsche Messe AG and the Lightweighting Initiative of the BMWi.

Two keynotes will lay the foundations for the subsequent panel discussions. Firstly, Professor Dr. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer Society , will analyze the opportunities and challenges inherent in lightweight engineering. Hannover/Jülich. What do hearts have to do with slowing down free neutrons? The answer to this question can be found in the city of Lund in southern Sweden, where the European Spallation Source (ESS) is currently under construction. With a construction budget of 1.85 billion euros, the ESS ranks among Europe’s biggest research infrastructure projects. Germany’s contribution to the project amounts to around 190 million euros and is being coordinated by the Forschungszentrum Jülich research center.

A high-intensity neutron beam can be generated in one of two ways: through nuclear fission or through spallation. Spallation produces neutron beams with a higher energy density and therefore a higher intensity. More importantly, it produces pulsed beams, which enables precision time-resolved measurements.

A spallation source is comprised of a proton accelerator, the target and a cold moderator. The proton accelerator directs proton beams at the atomic nuclei of the target at near light speed. While the beams dislodge only a few neutrons on impact, they excite the atomic nuclei, thereby expelling, or spalling, from 20 to 30 usable neutrons per nucleus. Since the neutrons spalled in this way are too fast and of too high energy to be used for experimental purposes, they need to be slowed down. But how? The speed of the neutrons emitted by the target needs to be reduced from around 20,000 kilometers per second to under 0.5 kilometers per second.

To meet this challenge, scientists and engineers at Forschungszentrum Jülich have developed a para-hydrogen moderator encased in high-strength aluminum alloy. This pressure vessel, which is also known as the “cold heart”, is operated at -250°C (-418°F) and 10 bar of pressure, and emits around 4,000 watts of radiant heat. Despite its small size, it is critically important in that it determines the quality of the neutron beam. Such moderators, which are always used in pairs and in combination with a cooling system, reduce the speed of liberated neutrons before these enter the beam trajectory in any given experiment.

“Neutron research using such a high-power source gives us a unique opportunity to investigate biological processes and new materials,” explained Dr. S. M. Schmidt, a member of the executive board of Forschungszentrum Jülich. “With its decades of expertise, Forschungszentrum Jülich is ideally suited to coordinating Germany’s contributions to what is one of Europe’s biggest research projects and will play a key role in its success.”

Forschungszentrum Jülich will be showcasing its “Swedish project” at the North Rhine-Westphalia group pavilion (B30) in Hall 2 at this year’s HANNOVER MESSE. Sweden is the official Partner Country to be featured at HANNOVER MESSE 2019.

Hannover. Surface technology plays a decisive role in modern production processes and is therefore high up on the agenda at HANNOVER MESSE. Every two years the SurfaceTechnology Area forms an integral part of the Industrial Supply trade show – as will be the case from 1 to 5 April 2019. “High-tech surface treatment has earned a rightful place at HANNOVER MESSE,” explains Olaf Daebler, Global Director Industrial at Deutsche Messe AG. “Special-purpose coatings transform the physical properties of materials and prevent wear. This is relevant to users across all industrial sectors.” The SurfaceTechnology Area in Hall 5 focuses on the following topics: parts cleaning and pre-treatment; electroplating; painting; abrasive blasting; industrial plasma treatment; measuring, testing and analysis; and related services.

In 2019 the SurfaceTechnology Area will include a group presentation mounted by the German Mechanical Engineering Association VDMA and five of its member companies (Auer, Heimer, Krautzberger, Rump and WiWa). These enterprises will showcase innovative solutions in the areas of paint coating and abrasive blasting. Alongside key issues such as energy efficiency and resource conservation, digitization is a hot topic among small and medium-sized surface technology enterprises. On Monday 1 April the SurfaceTechnology Area will focus on an initiative launched by the VDMA with the aim of standardizing machine-to-machine communication in the surface technology segment. Deutsche Messe AG has pledged its support to the kick-off meeting of the joint working group of the VDMA OPC Surface Technology Initiative. “We very much welcome the interest of Deutsche Messe in this topic, which is so important to industry,” confirms Dr. Martin Riester, a member of the VDMA’s surface technology team. “Together with the OPC Foundation we will advance digitization in the field of surface technology. We are happy to have Deutsche Messe as a strong partner at our side.” Following the kick-off of the joint working group, further enterprises are expected to join this project. The VDMA OPC Surface Technology Initiative focuses on the interoperability of machines, installations and devices, as well as their interaction with peripherals and production management systems.

The VDMA group presentation will also centre on EN16985, the new European safety standard for paint spraying booths. In addition, work is commencing at an international level on the formulation of a new ISO safety standard for abrasive blasting installations.

The Industrial Supply Forum in Hall 4 will be the central venue for networking and knowledge transfer at HANNOVER MESSE 2019. Surface technology will figure prominently in the forum program on Thursday morning (4 April), when the lectures will get to grips with issues such as innovative nanotechnology, surface treatment and industrial plasma technology.

In 2019 HANNOVER MESSE will take place under the programmatic motto “Integrated Industry – Industrial Intelligence” – in other words, the digital networking of man and machine in the light of artificial intelligence. Among other issues, the spotlight will be on lightweight design – as evidenced in the 1st Lightweighting Summit initiated by the German Federal Government. Lightweight design solutions will be concentrated in Hall 5 – i.e. in the immediate vicinity of the SurfaceTechnology Area . The exhibitors will showcase lightweight design as a high-tech discipline which is directly relevant to all industrial processes and materials. The Integrated Lightweight Plaza will once again provide a central hotspot. Strong synergies will exist with other exhibit categories in Hall 5 – for example, smart materials, adhesive bonding and joining techniques, and digital factory solutions. The line-up in Halls 5 and 6 will also include blockchain technology and industrial security, engineering software, cloud solutions, platforms and services, virtual reality and additive manufacturing. In 2019 Sweden will be the official Partner Country of HANNOVER MESSE.

The SurfaceTechnology Area alternates with the Stuttgart-based trade fair SurfaceTechnology GERMANY (formerly known as O&S). In June 2018 this event attracted more than 6,000 visitors. Whereas SurfaceTechnology GERMANY is an established meeting-place and trend-setting forum, the exhibitors in Hannover have an opportunity to reach a diverse, international audience under the umbrella of the world’s largest industrial technology show. All the sectors represented at HANNOVER MESSE use surface technology in one form or another. Fifty percent of the visitors to the SurfaceTechnology Area come from the manufacturing sector. The largest visitor groups have their roots in mechanical and plant engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and the automotive sector, followed by aerospace, metalworking and plastics.

Hannover. The upcoming HANNOVER MESSE will again feature a special Digital Energy showcase in Hall 12, where innovative companies from around the world will present ideas and solutions for digitizing the entire energy sector.

A key focus will be on smart meters, particularly Germany’s nationwide rollout, which is currently gathering pace. Nationwide rollout of smart, digital electricity meters is fundamental to further efficiency gains and, indeed, to the energy transition. Hans-Jürgen Schmitt, CEO of PCVue Solutions , explains: “Building automation systems and indeed the electric power system as a whole cannot work properly unless all electricity meters are capable of transmitting their consumption readings digitally, because only then is it possible to achieve efficient, profitable energy management.” Smart meters are the all-important ‘last mile’ in energy system digitization.

The smart meter technology itself has been around for quite some time and is capable of measuring the electricity consumption of any device in any setting, be it in the home, in large public buildings or in factory halls. And there are many providers, including, for example, Germany’s B+G E-Tech GmbH , which offers a whole range of meter types. “Demand is growing, and our clientele is very diverse, ranging from end consumers to industrials,” says CEO Mathias Bruchholz. He believes the increasing demand is due to heightened energy awareness, with many customers now pursuing the benefits of reduced energy consumption. This view is echoed by Werner Derlet, a product manager with the German software provider FlowChief GmbH . He has noticed a greater awareness of energy efficiency. Working closely with engineering firms, FlowChief develops customized energy management systems for companies in a range of industries, including chemicals and wastewater treatment. FlowChief will be showcasing its “e-Gem” product at the Digital Energy pavilion at this year’s HANNOVER MESSE. e-Gem is an energy management software application that can be accessed via browser, enabling users to keep tabs on all aspects of their energy consumption from any location.

While awareness of energy efficiency is growing, many sectors of society still have some catching-up to do. This is certainly true of Germany’s public sector and its extensive building portfolio. “Using our software, our customers are discovering they can reduce their energy consumption by 5 to 30 percent without any drop in climate control performance and comfort,” says Stefan S. Hindrichs, CEO of synavision GmbH , a provider of software for the intelligent monitoring of automation functions in technical building systems. But while energy cost savings of up to a third sound promising, Hindrichs adds a word of caution: “To actually achieve better energy efficiency in buildings, we need the precision of digital tools and processes at all stages, from building planning, right the way through to operation.”

Daniel Fierus-Beyer, CEO of PQ Plus GmbH, another Digital Energy exhibitor, notes that timely planning and long-term planning certainty are also important when it comes to operating and upgrading power grids. The same is true, he says, of electricity quality, especially now that power grids are receiving ever greater in-feeds from solar, wind, hydro and biogas. Based in Germany,PQ Plus GmbH specializes in energy management, providing a wide range of solutions, including multi-channel meters for monitoring and verifying grid quality. Fierus-Beyer explains that the growth in fluctuating green in-feeds is not the only problem for power grids. Sector coupling is also a challenge: “More and more people are charging their electric cars overnight, so next thing you know, residential areas will be looking more like industrial zones in terms of electricity demands.”

This phenomenon – the convergence of industrial manufacturing, power grids, renewable energy and mobility as a result of digitization – will also feature at the showcases of many other exhibitors at the Digital Energy display, including Athion GmbH ,econ solutions GmbH and GreenPocket GmbH. TQ-Systems GmbH will also be there, back after its successful debut last year. “This year, our showcase will focus on intelligent charging management in electric mobility,” explains Jörg Jungbauer, head of TQ’s Automation division. “We will be presenting a solution for achieving charging infrastructure in industrial and commercial settings. We’ll also be presenting our patented Energy Manager, which puts modular energy automation in the hands of home owners.” Enapter GmbH will also be exhibiting at Digital Energy. Enapter, a start-up, offers electrolyzers for end consumers. “We’ll be disrupting the hydrogen market with our affordable and simple-to-use technologies,” says Marketing Director Vaitea Cowan.
