Hannover, Germany. At the same time, it became clear that trade fairs, as a concrete networking venue for face-to-face contact, will remain a key business and innovation driver in the years to come. “The comeback of HANNOVER MESSE came at just the right time,” declared Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Managing Board of Deutsche Messe. “In the face of disrupted supply chains, rising energy prices, inflation and climate change, it was all the more important to meet again face-to-face in the exhibition halls after two years marked by a pandemic, to take in the latest technology trends and get a window to the future. After four days at the tradeshow, industry, politics and research are all sending a clear signal from Hannover: Pandemics and wars must not and will not slow down the process of industrial transformation – to the contrary, we must move even faster to achieve the process of digitization and sustainability,” he added.

German Economics Minister Robert Habeck summed up the situation after a tour of the tradeshow on Tuesday: “Just taking in all the technologies on display here into account, we have the solution to all our current crises. What we see here at the trade fair is the reflection of the major problems of our time with concrete answers – which is a fascinating development.”

Round about 75,000 visitors networked with 2,500 exhibitors on ways and means of making their value chains fit for the future. “Exhibitors’ expectations at this special HANNOVER MESSE were fully met. Which was also reflected in the overwhelming intention to return again for HANNOVER MESSE 2023. Nearly all exhibitors have already announced that they will be back next year. I would like to thank all the people who have been so courageous with us in making this trade fair happen again, despite all the uncertainties of the last few weeks,” explained Köckler.

This assessment was seconded by ZVEI President and Chairman of the Hannover Messe Exhibitors’ Advisory Board Dr. Gunther Kegel, who explained: “The relaunch of Hannover Messe has been a great success and has come at exactly the right time. It is irreplaceable for the dialog between politics and industry, especially in changing political and social times like these. On the basis of their innovations, the companies in the electrical and digital industries have shown they can be relied on in the transformation toward a climate-neutral industrial society.”

“It is important that politicians now keep their word and provide the appropriate framework conditions so that the momentum of the trade fair can be translated into concrete action. We are looking forward next year to welcoming even more guests from abroad,” Kegel continued.

“With its thematic focus on energy, security of supply and industrial trans-formation, HANNOVER MESSE 2022 has impressively demonstrated that we need such a leading flagship fair – more than ever after two years of pandemic,” declared VDMA Executive Director Thilo Brodtmann. “In an environment that was more challenging than ever, the exhibits showed there is no sub¬stitute for personal contact. This applies to the relationship between companies and their clients or the next generation, but also to high-level discussions with politicians, for which Hannover Messe represents the ideal venue.”

Tradeshow attendees learned how they could use automation and digitization to reduce energy consumption in their factories and production facilities. How they could power their production using electricity from hydrogen or how they can build resilience into their supply chains. From large-scale solutions such as the digitization of development and production processes in automotive manufacturing, to algae as a substitute for plastic, to the targeted use of software to record and reduce the C02 footprint, HANNOVER MESSE offered a broad picture of the technological options for the industry of today and tomorrow.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and many of the decision-makers from politics and business warned against turning away from globalization. Nevertheless, a readjustment was necessary. The idea of “friend-shoring” was the buzzword at the fair. What was meant was building up production and business in countries that maintained a similar value system. Like the partner country Portugal, which presented itself during the fair as a highly attractive and dynamic location for investment and partnerships.

In addition to the 75,000 attendees on the exhibition grounds, another 15,000 visitors attended the event digitally. They followed the conference program, took advantage of the digital product presentations and conducted conversations via chat or video call. As Köckler put it: “We succeeded in bringing together the best of the real and digital worlds. Nevertheless, it has once again been confirmed: When thousands of visitors meet thousands of exhibitors, this is only possible in a direct, face-to-face setting. The magic of a fair cannot be digitally reproduced.”

The next HANNOVER MESSE takes place from 17 to 21 April 2023.

Green energies and hydrogen – driving supply security and climate protection

When it comes to CO2-neutral production and energy security in Europe, renewable energies and green hydrogen play a key role. Many companies already lead the way with concrete solutions. For example, HANNOVER MESSE exhibitor Bosch created a hydrogen cycle at its Industrie 4.0 facility that produces green hydrogen for industrial processes.

Because of the current energy supply debate, the topic of hydrogen is gaining further importance at HANNOVER MESSE. “We have offered the largest European platform for the hydrogen and fuel cell industry for years. Using digitalization, automation and AI to help combat climate change

The world of industry will not be able to meet in Hannover this year. Comprehensive travel restrictions, bans on group gatherings and a prohibition decree in the Hannover region make it impossible to stage HANNOVER MESSE. At the same time, the corona crisis is affecting the economy, and the manufacturing industry – HANNOVER MESSE’s core clientele – is already struggling with serious consequences of the pandemic. Demand and sales in German industry are declining, resulting in supply bottlenecks, production stops and reduced working hours for employees.

“Given the dynamic development around Covid-19 and the extensive restrictions on public and economic life, HANNOVER MESSE cannot take place this year,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Board of Management, Deutsche Messe AG. “Our exhibitors, partners and our entire team did everything they could to make it happen, but today we have to accept that in 2020 it will not be possible to host the world’s most important industrial event.”

It is the first time in HANNOVER MESSE’s 73-year history that the event will not take place. However, the organizers will not let the show completely vanish. “The need for orientation and exchange is particularly important in times of crisis,” says Köckler. “That is why we are currently working intensely on a digital information and networking plattform for HANNOVER MESSE that we will open to our customers shortly.”

Various web-based formats will enable HANNOVER MESSE exhibitors and visitors to exchange information about upcoming economic policy challenges and technological solutions. Live streams will transport interactive expert interviews, panel discussions and best-case presentations all over the world. The online exhibitor and product search is also being enhanced, for example with a function that enables visitors and exhibitors to contact each other directly.

“We firmly believe that nothing can replace direct, person-to-person contact and we are already looking forward to the time after Corona,” says Köckler. “But especially in times of crisis, we must be flexible and act pragmatically. As organizers of the world’s most important industrial trade fair, we want to offer orientation and sustain economic life during the crisis. We are doing that with our new digital offering.”

Thilo Brodtmann, executive director of Germany’s Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), said, “The cancellation of HANNOVER MESSE 2020 is an unfortunate decision, but it is the only correct one. The mechanical engineering industry must now concentrate on minimizing the consequences of the pandemic in its own operations so that it can start up again. In April 2021, the engineers will be back in Hannover in full force.”

Wolfgang Weber, Chairman of the ZVEI Management Board: “The fact that Hannover Messe 2020 cannot be hosted is a bitter loss, but it is the right decision. For the electrical industry, the fair is the showcase to the world, which unfortunately remains closed this year. So our companies will use the time until 2021 to manage the considerable consequences of Corona. Next year, they will then present themselves with the latest products and solutions for Industry 4.0 and the energy system of the future.”

eutsche Messe made the decision to postpone HANNOVER MESSE 2020 to July 2020 in close cooperation with the Hannover Region Health Authority, the HANNOVER MESSE Exhibitors’ Council and the partner associations VDMA (German Engineering Federation) and ZVEI (German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association).

The Hannover Region Health Authority had strongly recommended that Deutsche Messe follow the advice of the Robert Koch Institute, which includes comprehensive measures to safeguard health when hosting major events. For instance, fever measuring stations at all entrances and not allowing people from risk areas or those who have had contact with people from risk areas to enter the exhibition center. This would have entailed a comprehensive evaluation of all trade fair participants – from exhibitors and visitors to service providers, exhibit builders and catering companies.

Deutsche Messe is unable to implement the proposed measures. In addition, their implementation would impair the staging of the event to such an extent that the event would not fulfill its purpose or would do so only with considerable restrictions for exhibitors and visitors.

Since the health of exhibitors, visitors, employees, and the public is the top priority for Deutsche Messe, the decision was made in consultation with HANNOVER MESSE’s exhibitor advisory councils to switch to the July date.

“With the July date, we offer our exhibitors the earliest possible time slot to present their innovations to a global audience and to initiate business,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Deutsche Messe AG. “In view of the global economic challenges triggered by the Coronavirus in the first half of the year, the new date offers great opportunities. Thus the world’s most important industrial trade fair can provide important impetus for the global economy at an early stage.”

“The VDMA supports the decision of Deutsche Messe AG. In regards to the current challenges caused by the Coronavirus, postponing HANNOVER MESSE until July is the best possible option,” says VDMA Chief Executive Thilo Brodtmann. “We assume that the situation will calm down in the coming months and that the mechanical engineering industry will then benefit from a reviving business situation.”

“Today’s decision by Deutsche Messe AG to postpone HANNOVER MESSE comes at the right time,” emphasizes Wolfgang Weber, Chairman of the ZVEI Management Board. “As an internationally important industrial trade show, its USP is the gathering of people from all over the world. This can only happen if there are no health risks. Furthermore, it is important for the electrical industry to present its products for Industry 4.0, electrification and greater energy efficiency to the public this summer.”

Hannover. Modular production technology is now sufficiently mature to be released onto the market. Visitors at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 will be able to witness this for themselves at the “Process INDUSTRY 4.0: The Age of Modular Production” showcase in Hall 11. The showcase will feature exhibits and live demonstrations that highlight a particularly fast and efficient way of engineering modules (encapsulated, self-contained production units with their own automation and control intelligence) based on MTP (Module Type Package), a standardized “language” that provides a digital description of the individual modules. With MTP, process manufacturers can integrate modules of any make via orchestration systems to create highly flexible, modular production plants. “This makes it possible to build and reconfigure process plants very quickly, as and when required,” explains Axel Haller (ABB), chair of the ZVEI Modular Automation working group. “This gives companies the flexibility to respond to changing market requirements while significantly reducing the engineering overhead involved.”

The “Process INDUSTRY 4.0: The Age of Modular Production” showcase is co-organized by the industry associations IPSE, NAMUR, ProcessNet (a joint initiative by DECHEMA and VDI), VDMA and ZVEI, with support from various companies, including ABB, B&R, Emerson, Endress+Hauser, Festo, HIMA, Pepperl + Fuchs, Phoenix Contact, Samson, Siemens, Wago and Yokogawa. Other showcase participants include universities (such as TU Dresden and Helmut-Schmidt University, Hamburg) and numerous process technology users, such as BASF, Bayer, CHT, Clariant, Covestro, Evonik, INVITE, Lanxess and Merck (all from the chemicals and/or pharmaceuticals industries). System integrators, such as SpiraTech, and module manufacturers, such as Seepex, Peter Huber Kältemaschinenbau and GEA, will also be taking part at the showcase.

NAMUR (User Association of Automation Technology in Process Industries)

MTP facilitates the integration of modular process units into higher-level control systems by encapsulating complexity, thereby making it easier to deal with, and by increasing flexibility without pushing up overheads. “NAMUR has absolutely no doubt that this approach will transform the world of automation,” says NAMUR CEO Heinrich Engelhard. NAMUR spearheads a number of working groups that are developing MTP-based approaches to modular production. At HANNOVER MESSES, these groups, made up of automation technology providers and users, will report on the current status of their development work. They have already conducted some initial pilot projects which demonstrate to impressive effect the benefits of this modular production approach in terms of reducing engineering overhead and boosting ease and flexibility of modification.

ISPE (International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering)

Pharmaceuticals manufacturers need to digitize their production documentation in order to comply with various regulatory requirements, including data integrity requirements. “The main challenge is to ensure that validated quality-relevant process data is made available for digitized documentation processes and archived for future audits,” says Wolfgang Dedden, Co-Chair of the ISPE Plug & Produce working group. “By collaborating with NAMUR, we aim to ensure that new approaches, such as MTP and NOA, are available to pharmaceuticals manufacturers in usable form right from the outset, so that we can achieve security of investment for both module suppliers and module operators.”

ProcessNet

“With components for modular automation now available on the market, it is now possible to realize the first modular production plants in chemicals and pharmaceuticals process manufacturing. We urgently need modular production, so that we can respond quickly and flexibly to market requirements,” said Dr. Frank Stenger, Chair of the Modular Plants working group at ProcessNet . Modular plant designs and associated automation and process control strategies are a key focus of the process engineering community at ProcessNet.

VDMA (German Engineering Federation)

By combining and interconnecting modular production units via MPT, it is now possible to design, configure and modify production plants much faster and more simply than has previously been the case. “This opens up a wealth of new possibilities for equipment manufacturers,” explains Richard Clemens, CEO of the Process Plant and Equipment Association within the VDMA . For plant manufacturers, this trend from stand-alone items of equipment towards integrated systems is not fundamentally new. But the methodology is new. Standardization of interfaces between production modules promises to greatly simplify business processes in industry and open up new areas of business.

On Tuesday, 2 April, leading experts from politics, business and research will be on stage at the first-ever Lightweighting Summit under the umbrella of HANNOVER MESSE. Organized by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, this event will create the basis for a profitable dialogue on the importance of lightweight design and engineering, examine the current competitive situation and explore strategies aimed at promoting this key technology.

Hannover. The 1st Lightweighting Summit will focus on the importance of lightweight engineering in the context of digitization and globalization. “Lightweight engineering is a strong innovation-driver which can contribute to enhanced resource and energy efficiency,” says Federal Economics Minister Peter Altmaier. “This is equally important for environmental and climate protection, as well as for strengthening Germany’s competitiveness as an industrial location. Lightweight engineering has an important role to play in mastering global challenges.” In his role as the summit’s patron, Altmaier will welcome the visitors at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, 2 April. Introductory speeches will also be delivered by Dr. Michael Meister, Parliamentary Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research , and Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) has organized this decision-makers’ forum in collaboration with Deutsche Messe AG and the Lightweighting Initiative of the BMWi.

Two keynotes will lay the foundations for the subsequent panel discussions. Firstly, Professor Dr. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer Society , will analyze the opportunities and challenges inherent in lightweight engineering. Secondly, Dr. Ralf Fröchtenicht, who represents BMW’s Purchasing and Supplier Network, will talk about the importance of lightweight design in the automotive industry. In addition to the two keynote speakers, Christoph Dammermann, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia, Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs of Baden-Württemberg, and Dr. Andreas Gebauer-Teichmann, a member of Volkswagen’s Group Technology Strategy & Management Dept., will contribute to the subsequent panel discussion on the significance of lightweight engineering for Germany as an industrial location.

The first panel discussion (featuring Prof. Dr. Hubert Jäger, Professor of Lightweight Systems Engineering and Multi-Material Design at Dresden Technical University and CEO of Carbon Composites, and Dr. Peter Dahlmann, Managing Director of the VDEh Steel Institute) will outline the key elements in a national lightweight engineering strategy from the viewpoint of industry and the research community. The second panel discussion will continue the industry-policy dialogue, with contributions by Dr. Peter Dahlmann, Dr. Wolfgang Seeliger, Managing Director of Leichtbau BW GmbH, Dr. Winfried Horstmann, Head of Industrial Policy at the BMWi, Heinz Gaub, Director of Engineering at ARBURG, and Hans-Peter Dahm, Managing Director of TGM Lightweight Solutions. Finally, Björn Thümler, Lower Saxony’s Minister of Science and Culture, will present his conclusions. The 1st Lightweighting Summit will end at approx. 5 p.m.

The central information hub will be theIntegrated Lightweight Plaza in Hall 5 under the umbrella of Industrial Supply . The Industrial Supply Forum on the morning of Tuesday, 2 April, will also focus on lightweight engineering. The program embraces various lectures and discussions, all under the heading “Lightweight as an Enabler of Tomorrow’s Mobility”. The forum program has been organized by the VDMA Working Group on Hybrid Lightweight Technologies .

Hannover/Jülich. What do hearts have to do with slowing down free neutrons? The answer to this question can be found in the city of Lund in southern Sweden, where the European Spallation Source (ESS) is currently under construction. With a construction budget of 1.85 billion euros, the ESS ranks among Europe’s biggest research infrastructure projects. Germany’s contribution to the project amounts to around 190 million euros and is being coordinated by the Forschungszentrum Jülich research center.

A high-intensity neutron beam can be generated in one of two ways: through nuclear fission or through spallation. Spallation produces neutron beams with a higher energy density and therefore a higher intensity. More importantly, it produces pulsed beams, which enables precision time-resolved measurements.

A spallation source is comprised of a proton accelerator, the target and a cold moderator. The proton accelerator directs proton beams at the atomic nuclei of the target at near light speed. While the beams dislodge only a few neutrons on impact, they excite the atomic nuclei, thereby expelling, or spalling, from 20 to 30 usable neutrons per nucleus. Since the neutrons spalled in this way are too fast and of too high energy to be used for experimental purposes, they need to be slowed down. But how? The speed of the neutrons emitted by the target needs to be reduced from around 20,000 kilometers per second to under 0.5 kilometers per second.

To meet this challenge, scientists and engineers at Forschungszentrum Jülich have developed a para-hydrogen moderator encased in high-strength aluminum alloy. This pressure vessel, which is also known as the “cold heart”, is operated at -250°C (-418°F) and 10 bar of pressure, and emits around 4,000 watts of radiant heat. Despite its small size, it is critically important in that it determines the quality of the neutron beam. Such moderators, which are always used in pairs and in combination with a cooling system, reduce the speed of liberated neutrons before these enter the beam trajectory in any given experiment.

“Neutron research using such a high-power source gives us a unique opportunity to investigate biological processes and new materials,” explained Dr. S. M. Schmidt, a member of the executive board of Forschungszentrum Jülich. “With its decades of expertise, Forschungszentrum Jülich is ideally suited to coordinating Germany’s contributions to what is one of Europe’s biggest research projects and will play a key role in its success.”

Forschungszentrum Jülich will be showcasing its “Swedish project” at the North Rhine-Westphalia group pavilion (B30) in Hall 2 at this year’s HANNOVER MESSE. Sweden is the official Partner Country to be featured at HANNOVER MESSE 2019.
