After two years of the COVID pandemic, the first HANNOVER MESSE came to a close, with exhibitors and organizers drawing a thoroughly positive balance sheet. HANNOVER MESSE demonstrated how the process of industrial transformation is progressing, and that industry has the answers to the dual challenge of climate protection and energy security.

Hannover, Germany. At the same time, it became clear that trade fairs, as a concrete networking venue for face-to-face contact, will remain a key business and innovation driver in the years to come. “The comeback of HANNOVER MESSE came at just the right time,” declared Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Managing Board of Deutsche Messe. “In the face of disrupted supply chains, rising energy prices, inflation and climate change, it was all the more important to meet again face-to-face in the exhibition halls after two years marked by a pandemic, to take in the latest technology trends and get a window to the future. After four days at the tradeshow, industry, politics and research are all sending a clear signal from Hannover: Pandemics and wars must not and will not slow down the process of industrial transformation – to the contrary, we must move even faster to achieve the process of digitization and sustainability,” he added.

German Economics Minister Robert Habeck summed up the situation after a tour of the tradeshow on Tuesday: “Just taking in all the technologies on display here into account, we have the solution to all our current crises. What we see here at the trade fair is the reflection of the major problems of our time with concrete answers – which is a fascinating development.”

Round about 75,000 visitors networked with 2,500 exhibitors on ways and means of making their value chains fit for the future. “Exhibitors’ expectations at this special HANNOVER MESSE were fully met. Which was also reflected in the overwhelming intention to return again for HANNOVER MESSE 2023. Nearly all exhibitors have already announced that they will be back next year. I would like to thank all the people who have been so courageous with us in making this trade fair happen again, despite all the uncertainties of the last few weeks,” explained Köckler.

This assessment was seconded by ZVEI President and Chairman of the Hannover Messe Exhibitors’ Advisory Board Dr. Gunther Kegel, who explained: “The relaunch of Hannover Messe has been a great success and has come at exactly the right time. It is irreplaceable for the dialog between politics and industry, especially in changing political and social times like these. On the basis of their innovations, the companies in the electrical and digital industries have shown they can be relied on in the transformation toward a climate-neutral industrial society.”

“It is important that politicians now keep their word and provide the appropriate framework conditions so that the momentum of the trade fair can be translated into concrete action. We are looking forward next year to welcoming even more guests from abroad,” Kegel continued.

“With its thematic focus on energy, security of supply and industrial trans-formation, HANNOVER MESSE 2022 has impressively demonstrated that we need such a leading flagship fair – more than ever after two years of pandemic,” declared VDMA Executive Director Thilo Brodtmann. “In an environment that was more challenging than ever, the exhibits showed there is no sub¬stitute for personal contact. This applies to the relationship between companies and their clients or the next generation, but also to high-level discussions with politicians, for which Hannover Messe represents the ideal venue.”

Brodtmann continued, “Just having German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Economics and Climate Minister Robert Habeck, as well as Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger pledge their support for the concerns of industrial SMEs in Hannover means a great deal in times like these. That’s why we’re confident that, again next year, when guests will hopefully be able to travel from even further away, that Hannover Messe will continue to regain its traditional size and scope.”

Tradeshow attendees learned how they could use automation and digitization to reduce energy consumption in their factories and production facilities. How they could power their production using electricity from hydrogen or how they can build resilience into their supply chains. From large-scale solutions such as the digitization of development and production processes in automotive manufacturing, to algae as a substitute for plastic, to the targeted use of software to record and reduce the C02 footprint, HANNOVER MESSE offered a broad picture of the technological options for the industry of today and tomorrow.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and many of the decision-makers from politics and business warned against turning away from globalization. Nevertheless, a readjustment was necessary. The idea of “friend-shoring” was the buzzword at the fair. What was meant was building up production and business in countries that maintained a similar value system. Like the partner country Portugal, which presented itself during the fair as a highly attractive and dynamic location for investment and partnerships.

In addition to the 75,000 attendees on the exhibition grounds, another 15,000 visitors attended the event digitally. They followed the conference program, took advantage of the digital product presentations and conducted conversations via chat or video call. As Köckler put it: “We succeeded in bringing together the best of the real and digital worlds. Nevertheless, it has once again been confirmed: When thousands of visitors meet thousands of exhibitors, this is only possible in a direct, face-to-face setting. The magic of a fair cannot be digitally reproduced.”

The next HANNOVER MESSE takes place from 17 to 21 April 2023.

Portugal has generated significant international awareness in the field of energy. The Partner Country at this year’s HANNOVER MESSE presents 13 innovative Portuguese companies with advanced technological solutions in renewable energies.

Hannover/Lisbon. Portugal boasts one of the highest rates of green energy consumption in Europe. From 30 May to 2 June at HANNOVER MESSE 2022, companies from Partner Country Portugal present their technological solutions for clean-energy production and demonstrate to the global market Portugal’s vast know-how and experience in the renewable electricity sector.

In December 2021, Portugal became the fourth country in Europe to eliminate coal in electricity production. Portugal has consistently reduced fossil fuel-based energy consumption by using cutting-edge technologies to diversify renewable resources for energy production. Benefits include more efficient use of resources, more sustainable mobility and greater security of supply.

Portugal’s geographical position is favorable to all renewable energies, creating opportunities and competitive advantages for the export of goods and services in this sector. Renewable energies currently represent around 1.6 percent of Portugal’s GDP and have generated more than 45,000 jobs in recent years.

Portugal ranks ninth in global contribution to Planet & Climate in the Good Countries Index and is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Portugal created the first-ever floating solar project at an existing hydroelectric facility and developed the first offshore floating wind farm in continental Europe, the Windfloat Atlantic. In December 2020, Portugal reached 111 hours of national energy consumption without conventional thermal power production.

Portugal is a leader in the European Union’s energy transition – its National Strategy for Green Hydrogen exemplifies its commitment to renewable energies by promoting progressive integration of hydrogen into various sectors on the road to a decarbonized economy. The strategy also aims to create a green hydrogen export hub for Europe, which is essential to advancing global growth in the sector.

Several Portuguese companies offer urban mobility solutions for smart cities, including producing hydrogen for storage in chargers and operating hydrogen-powered buses.

“In 2020, Portugal was the fifth country in the European Union with the largest share of energy from renewable sources. In 2021, 60 percent of electricity consumption in Portugal was produced through renewable resources. Portugal is a great country to invest in, featuring a clean environment and sustainable solutions,” said Luís Castro Henriques, chairman and CEO of AICEP – Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency.

At HANNOVER MESSE 2022, the Portugal Energy Solutions Pavilion in Hall 13 features 13 Portuguese companies: ENERGEST , Fusion-Fuel , ISQ , PRF , Zembe , Cleanwatts , EDP Renewables, EFACEC , Enermeter , Galp, Indisol , REN and STREAMVALUE .

The world is experiencing a turning point in international economic and energy policy – one that brings with it rising energy prices, disrupted supply chains and a major impact on global industrial production. At the same time, a growing number of manufacturers are doing their part to combat climate change. The world needs speedy solutions in this area: political, economic and technological. HANNOVER MESSE 2022 is the ideal setting.

Hannover, Germany. From 30 May to 2 June, some 2,500 companies display their technologies for the factories and energy systems of the future at the Hannover Exhibition Center. Under the lead theme of “Industrial Transformation”, they demonstrate how connected production facilities can operate more efficiently and conserve resources as well as how to generate and transmit energy sustainably.

“In view of the current global political situation, the topics at HANNOVER MESSE are more relevant than ever,” reported Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe, at the HANNOVER MESSE preview event. “At the heart of the matter is how we can ensure security of supply and growth in a dynamically changing world – politically, environmentally and economically – while counteracting climate change. Innovative technologies will play a key role in this,” he added.

Exhibiting companies include corporations like Siemens, Bosch, Schneider Electric, Schaeffler, Microsoft, SAP and Service Now, joined by numerous medium-sized industrial enterprises such as Beckhoff, Festo, Harting, Pepperl+Fuchs, Phoenix Contact, Wago and Ziehl-Abegg. Accompanying them are major research institutes like Fraunhofer and Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) as well as roughly 100 startups that find HANNOVER MESSE an ideal platform for networking with industry.

Green energies and hydrogen – driving supply security and climate protection

When it comes to CO2-neutral production and energy security in Europe, renewable energies and green hydrogen play a key role. Many companies already lead the way with concrete solutions. For example, HANNOVER MESSE exhibitor Bosch created a hydrogen cycle at its Industrie 4.0 facility that produces green hydrogen for industrial processes.

Because of the current energy supply debate, the topic of hydrogen is gaining further importance at HANNOVER MESSE. “We have offered the largest European platform for the hydrogen and fuel cell industry for years. In Hannover, more than 200 companies – including Iberdrola, Saint Gobain, Emerson, ElringKlinger, Plug Power, Siemens, Phoenix Contact, Enapter, Bosch, Hexagon Purus, Nel Hydrogen, Hydrogenious and GP Joule – present solutions for a sustainable energy supply based on hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources,” said Köckler.

Using digitalization, automation and AI to help combat climate change

Europe is striving to become climate-neutral by the middle of the millennium. More and more companies have set ambitious goals and are in the process of completely converting their production and services. HANNOVER MESSE exhibitors supply the necessary technologies.

Not only can the production of virtually all goods be made more resource-conserving and energy-efficient with the help of state-of-the-art machinery and equipment, but solutions from mechanical and plant engineering, electrical engineering, and the software and IT industry can also vastly improve the control processes of complex systems, thus boosting innovation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the world.

Recording the CO2 footprint across entire supply chains is often the first step towards climate neutrality. HANNOVER MESSE exhibitor Siemens has developed software that captures emissions data along the supply chain and combines this with data from the company’s own value chain to determine a product’s actual carbon footprint.

Economic policy platform plus Partner Country Portugal

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Portugal’s Prime Minister António Costa will jointly open HANNOVER MESSE. This year, Portugal is the Partner Country of the world’s foremost industrial trade fair.

More than 120 companies from Partner Country Portugal have registered for HANNOVER MESSE 2022. Under the motto “Portugal Makes Sense”, they present their products and solutions for digital transformation, the energy transition and reliable supply chains.

Other political dignitaries, such as Frans Timmermanns, Vice President of the European Commission, and Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Federal Minister of Education and Research, have also confirmed their attendance. This means that after a two-year “coronavirus break”, HANNOVER MESSE once again provides an international stage for economic policy discourse. According to Köckler, “At the end of May, the global industrial community will be looking to Hannover. This year in particular, HANNOVER MESSE 2022 can send economic policy signals and build bridges.”

In addition to the exhibits at the show, attendees can look forward to a first-rate supporting program. The four conference stages cover topics like automation, cloud and infrastructure, analytics and data management, digital platforms, robotics, IT security, artificial intelligence, renewable energies, green hydrogen, energy-efficient and CO2-neutral production, digital energy management, the circular economy and much more. The complete program will not only be available to visitors on-site, but will also stream simultaneously via the HANNOVER MESSE website.

Partner Country Portugal boasts one of Europe’s most liberal business ecosystems with policies that favor foreign investment. Portuguese companies develop innovative digital technologies that enable international companies to improve the quality of life for millions of people.

Hannover/Lisbon. From 30 May to 2 June, Partner Country Portugal at HANNOVER MESSE showcases innovative companies that specialize in developing proven, sophisticated high tech solutions in areas such as artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, Big Data, cloud computing, cyber-physical systems, Industrial Internet of Things, intelligent energy solutions, sensors, and smart materials.

Portuguese companies, many of which are small or medium-sized, are well-versed in Industrie 4.0 concepts that drive industrial transformation. They provide solutions to industries ranging from automotive and transport, food, and medical devices to molds and plastics, packaging and pharmaceuticals.

For example, Portuguese providers offer smart manufacturing execution solutions that monitor processes in real-time. These form part of next-generation software developed for the industry, helping managers make better decisions based on instant information gathered from the shop floor.

Thanks to digitalization, small companies make more and more breakthroughs in fields that were once the exclusive preserve of big industrial players. With disruptive ideas and distinctive technologies, Portuguese startups punch above their weight and have built an ecosystem that is home to established unicorns such as Farfetch, Outsystems, Talkdesk, Feedzai, Remote, Unbabel, and Sword Health as well as newcomers like Defined.ai and Veniam. Partner Country Portugal is a unique opportunity for global companies to partner with these entrepreneurs to advance research and development projects.

Portugal also stands out at the scientific level: the European Union chose the country to install one of eight new European supercomputers for research. This supercomputer, which becomes operational in 2022, provides researchers with access to more and better processing power for projects in areas such as medicine and artificial intelligence.

The Portugal Digital Ecosystems Pavilion is located in Hall 5 at HANNOVER MESSE 2022.

Due to the current situation surrounding Covid, Deutsche Messe AG will stage the world’s leading trade show for industrial technology from 30 May to 2 June. The new date provides exhibitors and visitors with planning security.

19 Jan 2022

Deutsche Messe AG, in close cooperation with the HANNOVER MESSE exhibitor advisory board and partner associations VDMA (Association of German Mechanical and Plant Engineering) and ZVEI (Central Association of German Electrical Engineering and Digital Industry), has rescheduled HANNOVER MESSE 2022 for 30 May–2 June. The show was originally planned for April.

“Due to the continuing high incidence in Germany and many neighboring countries, we decided together with our exhibitors to reschedule HANNOVER MESSE. Last year demonstrated that the summer months are best for major events during this pandemic. Right now we cannot predict if the Covid situation will be better by April, so the new date offers our customers the greatest possible planning security so that they can present their innovations at the world’s most important industrial trade show,” said Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe AG.

At the beginning of June 2022, HANNOVER MESSE will be the world’s first major industrial event. Its focus on digitalization and sustainability will stimulate innovative and efficient approaches to production and climate protection. This year’s show runs four days due to the Hannover Exhibition Center’s full event calendar in June. In 2023, HANNOVER MESSE will resume its normal five-day schedule in April.

“It is right to postpone HANNOVER MESSE to a later date and allow the vaccination rate to increase, which is in the interest of exhibitors and visitors to the fair. The later date also increases the probability of a bigger audience both nationally and internationally, which benefits everyone. The mechanical and plant engineering sector will present itself in Hannover as a technological enabler of climate protection and digitalization as well as a provider and user of cutting-edge technology for networked and intelligent production,” says VDMA General Manager Thilo Brodtmann.

“HANNOVER MESSE is the world’s most important industrial showcase for our companies, so the new date is correct given the current circumstances. We are convinced that in the summer we will reach a larger audience interested in Industrie 4.0 and its contribution to sustainability. With our innovations in automation, digitalization, electrification, and energy efficiency, the electrical and digital industry is guiding the industrial transition to a climate-neutral circular economy. We want to show the broadest possible audience what this path can look like, because we can only master this challenge if we work together. HANNOVER MESSE offers the perfect setting for this,” says Wolfgang Weber, Chairman of the ZVEI Management Board.

Despite the Corona crisis, industrial transformation continues unabated. With its mega topics of digitalization, individualization, climate protection, and demographic change, it is the focus of the HANNOVER MESSE Digital Days. This new two-day digital event provides an overview of current developments in the fields of industry, energy and logistics and provides orientation for the time during and after the crisis.

Hannover. HANNOVER MESSE Digital Days start on 14 July with exciting keynotes from business, science and politics as well as panel discussions, live chats, networking, and innovation presentations. Everything revolves around the questions of how industrial transformation can succeed and which steps industry must take to recover quickly from the consequences of the shutdown.

“With the Digital Days, we are creating an online platform for the entire HANNOVER MESSE community. We had to cancel the show this year due to the corona pandemic, but people still need to learn about the latest technological products and solutions and to talk with experts from all over the world. Because tomorrow’s innovations are only possible when different industries and cultures exchange ideas,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Managing Board, Deutsche Messe AG.

The HANNOVER MESSE Digital Days revolve around the content of the show. For example, the conference program focuses on topics such as Industrie 4.0, artificial intelligence, smart energy, and Logistics 4.0. Exhibitor products and solutions form the second layer of content. Networking also plays a prominent role: All participants can search for suitable business and cooperation partners and contact each other directly using the chat function.

One of the biggest highlights is the HERMES AWARD ceremony. For the first time, this internationally coveted technology prize will be awarded digitally. A jury chaired by Dr. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, chose the winner from numerous high-quality submissions. The announcement will be made on 14 July.

HANNOVER MESSE Digital Days

HANNOVER MESSE is the world’s leading trade show for industrial technology. With the lead theme Industrial Transformation, it spotlights all of the latest topics in industry, including Industrie 4.0, artificial intelligence, 5G, and smart logistics. HANNOVER MESSE is expanding its portfolio this year with a digital event, HANNOVER MESSE Digital Days, which premieres from 14 to 15 July.

HANNOVER MESSE cannot take place this year due to the increasingly critical situation surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. The Hannover region has issued a decree that prohibits the staging of the world’s leading tradeshow for industrial technology. From now until the next HANNOVER MESSE in April 2021, a digital information and networking offer will provide exhibitors and visitors with the opportunity for economic policy orientation and technological exchange.

The world of industry will not be able to meet in Hannover this year. Comprehensive travel restrictions, bans on group gatherings and a prohibition decree in the Hannover region make it impossible to stage HANNOVER MESSE. At the same time, the corona crisis is affecting the economy, and the manufacturing industry – HANNOVER MESSE’s core clientele – is already struggling with serious consequences of the pandemic. Demand and sales in German industry are declining, resulting in supply bottlenecks, production stops and reduced working hours for employees.

“Given the dynamic development around Covid-19 and the extensive restrictions on public and economic life, HANNOVER MESSE cannot take place this year,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Board of Management, Deutsche Messe AG. “Our exhibitors, partners and our entire team did everything they could to make it happen, but today we have to accept that in 2020 it will not be possible to host the world’s most important industrial event.”

It is the first time in HANNOVER MESSE’s 73-year history that the event will not take place. However, the organizers will not let the show completely vanish. “The need for orientation and exchange is particularly important in times of crisis,” says Köckler. “That is why we are currently working intensely on a digital information and networking plattform for HANNOVER MESSE that we will open to our customers shortly.”

Various web-based formats will enable HANNOVER MESSE exhibitors and visitors to exchange information about upcoming economic policy challenges and technological solutions. Live streams will transport interactive expert interviews, panel discussions and best-case presentations all over the world. The online exhibitor and product search is also being enhanced, for example with a function that enables visitors and exhibitors to contact each other directly.

“We firmly believe that nothing can replace direct, person-to-person contact and we are already looking forward to the time after Corona,” says Köckler. “But especially in times of crisis, we must be flexible and act pragmatically. As organizers of the world’s most important industrial trade fair, we want to offer orientation and sustain economic life during the crisis. We are doing that with our new digital offering.”

Thilo Brodtmann, executive director of Germany’s Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), said, “The cancellation of HANNOVER MESSE 2020 is an unfortunate decision, but it is the only correct one. The mechanical engineering industry must now concentrate on minimizing the consequences of the pandemic in its own operations so that it can start up again. In April 2021, the engineers will be back in Hannover in full force.”

Wolfgang Weber, Chairman of the ZVEI Management Board: “The fact that Hannover Messe 2020 cannot be hosted is a bitter loss, but it is the right decision. For the electrical industry, the fair is the showcase to the world, which unfortunately remains closed this year. So our companies will use the time until 2021 to manage the considerable consequences of Corona. Next year, they will then present themselves with the latest products and solutions for Industry 4.0 and the energy system of the future.”

HANNOVER MESSE 2020 has been postponed to the week of 13 to 17 July. Deutsche Messe AG is thus responding to global developments related to the Coronavirus.

eutsche Messe made the decision to postpone HANNOVER MESSE 2020 to July 2020 in close cooperation with the Hannover Region Health Authority, the HANNOVER MESSE Exhibitors’ Council and the partner associations VDMA (German Engineering Federation) and ZVEI (German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association).

The Hannover Region Health Authority had strongly recommended that Deutsche Messe follow the advice of the Robert Koch Institute, which includes comprehensive measures to safeguard health when hosting major events. For instance, fever measuring stations at all entrances and not allowing people from risk areas or those who have had contact with people from risk areas to enter the exhibition center. This would have entailed a comprehensive evaluation of all trade fair participants – from exhibitors and visitors to service providers, exhibit builders and catering companies.

Deutsche Messe is unable to implement the proposed measures. In addition, their implementation would impair the staging of the event to such an extent that the event would not fulfill its purpose or would do so only with considerable restrictions for exhibitors and visitors.

Since the health of exhibitors, visitors, employees, and the public is the top priority for Deutsche Messe, the decision was made in consultation with HANNOVER MESSE’s exhibitor advisory councils to switch to the July date.

“With the July date, we offer our exhibitors the earliest possible time slot to present their innovations to a global audience and to initiate business,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Deutsche Messe AG. “In view of the global economic challenges triggered by the Coronavirus in the first half of the year, the new date offers great opportunities. Thus the world’s most important industrial trade fair can provide important impetus for the global economy at an early stage.”

“The VDMA supports the decision of Deutsche Messe AG. In regards to the current challenges caused by the Coronavirus, postponing HANNOVER MESSE until July is the best possible option,” says VDMA Chief Executive Thilo Brodtmann. “We assume that the situation will calm down in the coming months and that the mechanical engineering industry will then benefit from a reviving business situation.”

“Today’s decision by Deutsche Messe AG to postpone HANNOVER MESSE comes at the right time,” emphasizes Wolfgang Weber, Chairman of the ZVEI Management Board. “As an internationally important industrial trade show, its USP is the gathering of people from all over the world. This can only happen if there are no health risks. Furthermore, it is important for the electrical industry to present its products for Industry 4.0, electrification and greater energy efficiency to the public this summer.”

Make digital transformation tangible – that was what HANNOVER MESSE 2019 promised. After five days, the organizers announced a positive result. Artificial intelligence in industry and robotics, the potential of the new 5G mobile communications standard for industrial applications, lightweight design, and the future of work in a time of increasing digitalization were this year’s most important topics at the world’s leading tradeshow for industrial technology.

“HANNOVER MESSE 2019 showed that it is the world’s most important platform for all technologies related to industrial transformation,” said Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Managing Board at Deutsche Messe. “More than 215,000 visitors used HANNOVER MESSE to invest in new technologies and prepare their businesses for the future. Only Hannover provides the comprehensive look at application scenarios, the potential and the interaction of Industrie 4.0, artificial intelligence, 5G, and energy solutions.”

Roughly 6,500 exhibitors from around the world presented solutions for the future of manufacturing and energy supply, including more than 500 examples of the deployment of artificial intelligence in industrial manufacturing, 5G applications, and solutions for the energy and mobility transitions. Robotics was also a major draw for visitors. Leading robot manufacturers and robotics startups demonstrated real-world applications for all industry sectors. With 160 exhibiting companies, Partner Country Sweden stood out as a high-tech nation.

Nearly 40 percent of the show’s 215,000 attendees came from abroad. “The record-breaking turnout underlines the international significance of HANNOVER MESSE and shows Germany’s strength as an industrial location,” said Köckler. The top visitor countries after Germany were China (7,200), the Netherlands (5,900), Italy (3,400) and the USA (3,400). Partner Country Sweden contributed 2,600 visitors.

The show received high marks from participating exhibitors:

“There are a few clouds on the horizon for the mechanical engineering industry right now, making the role of HANNOVER MESSE all the more important as a continued beacon for industry and innovation. Mechanical engineers are at the vanguard of connected production environments, and the strong interest shown by visitors in machine-to-machine communication and the ‘global machine language’ OPC UA confirms that our members are at the forefront of developments.” Thilo Brodtmann, Executive Director of the German Engineering Federation

Another critical factor for integrated manufacturing is the ultrafast 5G mobile telecommunications standard, and this year’s HANNOVER MESSE generated some real momentum in this area. The Industry 4.0 wave has been rolling for a few years, and this year’s fair revealed how far we have come since it all started,” commented Thilo Brodtmann, Executive Director of the German Engineering Federation. (Thilo Bodmann)

“5G and Hannover Messe are a perfect fit,” said Dr. Klaus Mittelbach, CEO of the ZVEI industrial association. “Next year’s fair will feature numerous applications for 5G technology. Companies in the electrical engineering and electronics sector are eager to use this new mobile communications standard. Together with artificial intelligence, it is going to be an important competitive factor,” he concluded.

As a major premiere, the show’s technology partners Nokia and Qualcomm treated visitors to the first-ever 5G test environment. This enabled both solution providers and potential users to demonstrate and try out the potential of this new mobile telecommunications standard for industrial applications.

The 5G premiere at HANNOVER MESSE also marked the start of Deutsche Messe’s “smart venue” initiative, which over the course of the next several months will turn the Hannover Exhibition Center into the world’s first tradeshow venue with fully operational 5G technology.

In a rich array of HANNOVER MESSE forums and conferences, experts from industry, government and the R&D community stimulated fruitful dialogue on topics such as Industry 4.0, AI and the future of work. Among the supporting program’s popular highlights were the Lightweighting Summit organized by the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the Future of Work in Industry congress and the Industrial Pioneers Summit.

Staged under the motto “ Sweden Co-Lab ”, Sweden’s Partner Country showcase was all about innovation and collaboration. As Köckler put it: “Sweden impressed as a powerhouse of creative ideas for tomorrow’s technological solutions: liberal-minded, agreeable and highly innovative.”

HANNOVER MESSE sets course for bright future

In an age of digital transformation, HANNOVER MESSE is also evolving. Thanks to a strategic retooling, including a rebranding, new thematic approach and new physical layout of the showgrounds. HANNOVER MESSE is preparing to underscore its role as the world’s leading industrial technology showcase.

Featuring seven main display categories, the updated format will set the stage for further growth in the core segments of industry, energy and logistics.

The next HANNOVER MESSE will run from 20 to 24 April 2020, with Indonesia as the official Partner Country.

Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are now rapidly growing in importance as energy sources and energy storage media as the world increasingly turns to renewable energy sources. This trend is reflected at HANNOVER MESSE, as can be seen from the Hydrogen + Fuel Cells EUROPE exhibition, which is heading into its 25th season this year, with a record turnout of 170 exhibitors from 20 nations.

These exhibitors include ITM , NEL , H-TEC SYSTEMS , McPhy , Audi , Toyota , Daimler and many others. They will be in Hall 27, providing valuable information and insights on the many potential applications of hydrogen and fuel cells. To cap it all off, there will be a circuit on the open-air site where visitors can take fuel cell-powered vehicles for a test drive.

With more and more energy being generated from renewable sources, it is becoming increasingly important to find ways of using it efficiently. The key is to synchronize supply with demand, which is no easy feat, given the fluctuating, unpredictable nature of many forms of renewable energy. Power-to-x technologies can help solve this problem by storing renewably generated electricity for subsequent, flexible use. This is where fuel cells and “green” hydrogen come in. For example, they are an excellent complement to battery-powered vehicles and have an important role to play in emission-neutral mobility. Moreover, they enable short refueling times and hence larger operating ranges and a broader scope of uses for electric vehicles. They also reduce the use of rare earths and metals like cobalt, nickel and lithium, thereby also alleviating the problem of disposal. Hydrogen and fuel cells have potential applications in all forms of mobility – in buses, trucks, cars, trains, ships and aircraft. But they also have potential applications in other areas, such as in fuel-cell power plants, where they serve the dual purpose of providing energy storage and ensuring uninterrupted renewable electricity generation. Fuel cells therefore have a key part to play in the transformation of the world’s energy systems.

At HANNOVER MESSE 2019, which runs from 1 to 5 April, visitors will be able to learn about the current state of the art in this exciting area of technology at the Hydrogen + Fuel Cells EUROPE exhibition in Hall 27. There, on some 1,700 square meters of display space, 170 exhibitors will present the latest fuel cell applications and the latest solutions for storing renewably generated electricity by producing hydrogen. The exhibition also has an extensive supporting program. For example, visitors will be able to take fuel cell-powered cars, such as the Hyundai Nexo, the Mercedes-Benz GLC F-CELL or the Toyota Mira, for a test-drive in the Ride & Drive area of the open-air site. There will also be quality, in-depth information and discussion on offer at two special forums. Visitors and others who can’t make it to the forums in person will be able to follow the presentations and interviews live online.
