After two years of the COVID pandemic, the first HANNOVER MESSE came to a close, with exhibitors and organizers drawing a thoroughly positive balance sheet. HANNOVER MESSE demonstrated how the process of industrial transformation is progressing, and that industry has the answers to the dual challenge of climate protection and energy security.

Hannover, Germany. At the same time, it became clear that trade fairs, as a concrete networking venue for face-to-face contact, will remain a key business and innovation driver in the years to come. “The comeback of HANNOVER MESSE came at just the right time,” declared Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Managing Board of Deutsche Messe. “In the face of disrupted supply chains, rising energy prices, inflation and climate change, it was all the more important to meet again face-to-face in the exhibition halls after two years marked by a pandemic, to take in the latest technology trends and get a window to the future. After four days at the tradeshow, industry, politics and research are all sending a clear signal from Hannover: Pandemics and wars must not and will not slow down the process of industrial transformation – to the contrary, we must move even faster to achieve the process of digitization and sustainability,” he added.

German Economics Minister Robert Habeck summed up the situation after a tour of the tradeshow on Tuesday: “Just taking in all the technologies on display here into account, we have the solution to all our current crises. What we see here at the trade fair is the reflection of the major problems of our time with concrete answers – which is a fascinating development.”

Round about 75,000 visitors networked with 2,500 exhibitors on ways and means of making their value chains fit for the future. “Exhibitors’ expectations at this special HANNOVER MESSE were fully met. Which was also reflected in the overwhelming intention to return again for HANNOVER MESSE 2023. Nearly all exhibitors have already announced that they will be back next year. I would like to thank all the people who have been so courageous with us in making this trade fair happen again, despite all the uncertainties of the last few weeks,” explained Köckler.

This assessment was seconded by ZVEI President and Chairman of the Hannover Messe Exhibitors’ Advisory Board Dr. Gunther Kegel, who explained: “The relaunch of Hannover Messe has been a great success and has come at exactly the right time. It is irreplaceable for the dialog between politics and industry, especially in changing political and social times like these. On the basis of their innovations, the companies in the electrical and digital industries have shown they can be relied on in the transformation toward a climate-neutral industrial society.”

“It is important that politicians now keep their word and provide the appropriate framework conditions so that the momentum of the trade fair can be translated into concrete action. We are looking forward next year to welcoming even more guests from abroad,” Kegel continued.

“With its thematic focus on energy, security of supply and industrial trans-formation, HANNOVER MESSE 2022 has impressively demonstrated that we need such a leading flagship fair – more than ever after two years of pandemic,” declared VDMA Executive Director Thilo Brodtmann. “In an environment that was more challenging than ever, the exhibits showed there is no sub¬stitute for personal contact. This applies to the relationship between companies and their clients or the next generation, but also to high-level discussions with politicians, for which Hannover Messe represents the ideal venue.”

Brodtmann continued, “Just having German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Economics and Climate Minister Robert Habeck, as well as Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger pledge their support for the concerns of industrial SMEs in Hannover means a great deal in times like these. That’s why we’re confident that, again next year, when guests will hopefully be able to travel from even further away, that Hannover Messe will continue to regain its traditional size and scope.”

Tradeshow attendees learned how they could use automation and digitization to reduce energy consumption in their factories and production facilities. How they could power their production using electricity from hydrogen or how they can build resilience into their supply chains. From large-scale solutions such as the digitization of development and production processes in automotive manufacturing, to algae as a substitute for plastic, to the targeted use of software to record and reduce the C02 footprint, HANNOVER MESSE offered a broad picture of the technological options for the industry of today and tomorrow.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and many of the decision-makers from politics and business warned against turning away from globalization. Nevertheless, a readjustment was necessary. The idea of “friend-shoring” was the buzzword at the fair. What was meant was building up production and business in countries that maintained a similar value system. Like the partner country Portugal, which presented itself during the fair as a highly attractive and dynamic location for investment and partnerships.

In addition to the 75,000 attendees on the exhibition grounds, another 15,000 visitors attended the event digitally. They followed the conference program, took advantage of the digital product presentations and conducted conversations via chat or video call. As Köckler put it: “We succeeded in bringing together the best of the real and digital worlds. Nevertheless, it has once again been confirmed: When thousands of visitors meet thousands of exhibitors, this is only possible in a direct, face-to-face setting. The magic of a fair cannot be digitally reproduced.”

The next HANNOVER MESSE takes place from 17 to 21 April 2023.

The world is experiencing a turning point in international economic and energy policy – one that brings with it rising energy prices, disrupted supply chains and a major impact on global industrial production. At the same time, a growing number of manufacturers are doing their part to combat climate change. The world needs speedy solutions in this area: political, economic and technological. HANNOVER MESSE 2022 is the ideal setting.

Hannover, Germany. From 30 May to 2 June, some 2,500 companies display their technologies for the factories and energy systems of the future at the Hannover Exhibition Center. Under the lead theme of “Industrial Transformation”, they demonstrate how connected production facilities can operate more efficiently and conserve resources as well as how to generate and transmit energy sustainably.

“In view of the current global political situation, the topics at HANNOVER MESSE are more relevant than ever,” reported Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe, at the HANNOVER MESSE preview event. “At the heart of the matter is how we can ensure security of supply and growth in a dynamically changing world – politically, environmentally and economically – while counteracting climate change. Innovative technologies will play a key role in this,” he added.

Exhibiting companies include corporations like Siemens, Bosch, Schneider Electric, Schaeffler, Microsoft, SAP and Service Now, joined by numerous medium-sized industrial enterprises such as Beckhoff, Festo, Harting, Pepperl+Fuchs, Phoenix Contact, Wago and Ziehl-Abegg. Accompanying them are major research institutes like Fraunhofer and Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) as well as roughly 100 startups that find HANNOVER MESSE an ideal platform for networking with industry.

Green energies and hydrogen – driving supply security and climate protection

When it comes to CO2-neutral production and energy security in Europe, renewable energies and green hydrogen play a key role. Many companies already lead the way with concrete solutions. For example, HANNOVER MESSE exhibitor Bosch created a hydrogen cycle at its Industrie 4.0 facility that produces green hydrogen for industrial processes.

Because of the current energy supply debate, the topic of hydrogen is gaining further importance at HANNOVER MESSE. “We have offered the largest European platform for the hydrogen and fuel cell industry for years. In Hannover, more than 200 companies – including Iberdrola, Saint Gobain, Emerson, ElringKlinger, Plug Power, Siemens, Phoenix Contact, Enapter, Bosch, Hexagon Purus, Nel Hydrogen, Hydrogenious and GP Joule – present solutions for a sustainable energy supply based on hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources,” said Köckler.

Using digitalization, automation and AI to help combat climate change

Europe is striving to become climate-neutral by the middle of the millennium. More and more companies have set ambitious goals and are in the process of completely converting their production and services. HANNOVER MESSE exhibitors supply the necessary technologies.

Not only can the production of virtually all goods be made more resource-conserving and energy-efficient with the help of state-of-the-art machinery and equipment, but solutions from mechanical and plant engineering, electrical engineering, and the software and IT industry can also vastly improve the control processes of complex systems, thus boosting innovation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the world.

Recording the CO2 footprint across entire supply chains is often the first step towards climate neutrality. HANNOVER MESSE exhibitor Siemens has developed software that captures emissions data along the supply chain and combines this with data from the company’s own value chain to determine a product’s actual carbon footprint.

Economic policy platform plus Partner Country Portugal

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Portugal’s Prime Minister António Costa will jointly open HANNOVER MESSE. This year, Portugal is the Partner Country of the world’s foremost industrial trade fair.

More than 120 companies from Partner Country Portugal have registered for HANNOVER MESSE 2022. Under the motto “Portugal Makes Sense”, they present their products and solutions for digital transformation, the energy transition and reliable supply chains.

Other political dignitaries, such as Frans Timmermanns, Vice President of the European Commission, and Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Federal Minister of Education and Research, have also confirmed their attendance. This means that after a two-year “coronavirus break”, HANNOVER MESSE once again provides an international stage for economic policy discourse. According to Köckler, “At the end of May, the global industrial community will be looking to Hannover. This year in particular, HANNOVER MESSE 2022 can send economic policy signals and build bridges.”

In addition to the exhibits at the show, attendees can look forward to a first-rate supporting program. The four conference stages cover topics like automation, cloud and infrastructure, analytics and data management, digital platforms, robotics, IT security, artificial intelligence, renewable energies, green hydrogen, energy-efficient and CO2-neutral production, digital energy management, the circular economy and much more. The complete program will not only be available to visitors on-site, but will also stream simultaneously via the HANNOVER MESSE website.

HANNOVER MESSE cannot take place this year due to the increasingly critical situation surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. The Hannover region has issued a decree that prohibits the staging of the world’s leading tradeshow for industrial technology. From now until the next HANNOVER MESSE in April 2021, a digital information and networking offer will provide exhibitors and visitors with the opportunity for economic policy orientation and technological exchange.

The world of industry will not be able to meet in Hannover this year. Comprehensive travel restrictions, bans on group gatherings and a prohibition decree in the Hannover region make it impossible to stage HANNOVER MESSE. At the same time, the corona crisis is affecting the economy, and the manufacturing industry – HANNOVER MESSE’s core clientele – is already struggling with serious consequences of the pandemic. Demand and sales in German industry are declining, resulting in supply bottlenecks, production stops and reduced working hours for employees.

“Given the dynamic development around Covid-19 and the extensive restrictions on public and economic life, HANNOVER MESSE cannot take place this year,” says Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Board of Management, Deutsche Messe AG. “Our exhibitors, partners and our entire team did everything they could to make it happen, but today we have to accept that in 2020 it will not be possible to host the world’s most important industrial event.”

It is the first time in HANNOVER MESSE’s 73-year history that the event will not take place. However, the organizers will not let the show completely vanish. “The need for orientation and exchange is particularly important in times of crisis,” says Köckler. “That is why we are currently working intensely on a digital information and networking plattform for HANNOVER MESSE that we will open to our customers shortly.”

Various web-based formats will enable HANNOVER MESSE exhibitors and visitors to exchange information about upcoming economic policy challenges and technological solutions. Live streams will transport interactive expert interviews, panel discussions and best-case presentations all over the world. The online exhibitor and product search is also being enhanced, for example with a function that enables visitors and exhibitors to contact each other directly.

“We firmly believe that nothing can replace direct, person-to-person contact and we are already looking forward to the time after Corona,” says Köckler. “But especially in times of crisis, we must be flexible and act pragmatically. As organizers of the world’s most important industrial trade fair, we want to offer orientation and sustain economic life during the crisis. We are doing that with our new digital offering.”

Thilo Brodtmann, executive director of Germany’s Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), said, “The cancellation of HANNOVER MESSE 2020 is an unfortunate decision, but it is the only correct one. The mechanical engineering industry must now concentrate on minimizing the consequences of the pandemic in its own operations so that it can start up again. In April 2021, the engineers will be back in Hannover in full force.”

Wolfgang Weber, Chairman of the ZVEI Management Board: “The fact that Hannover Messe 2020 cannot be hosted is a bitter loss, but it is the right decision. For the electrical industry, the fair is the showcase to the world, which unfortunately remains closed this year. So our companies will use the time until 2021 to manage the considerable consequences of Corona. Next year, they will then present themselves with the latest products and solutions for Industry 4.0 and the energy system of the future.”

Hanovre.

The new CEBIT presents the trend technologies that are driving the digital transformation forward. Part 2 of the Preview is about future mobility, security, collaboration & Workspace 4.0, blockchain, eGovernment, augmented & virtual reality and influencer marketing.
New ideas for the mobility of the future

The new CEBIT area Future Mobility exhibits pioneering concepts for digital mobility. Volkswagen has announced “a festival of innovations” for CEBIT – from a test project with blockchain support to artificial intelligence in business to data-based traffic optimization in large cities. “The highlight will be a four-wheeled world premiere autonomous driving concept,” said Jonas Kulawik, IT Spokesperson, Global Group Communications, Volkswagen, at the Preview in Hannover, Germany (Hall 25, Stand A23; open-air site Q60).

IONITY wants to set up a pan-European high-power charging network for electric vehicles, a joint venture from carmakers BMW, Daimler, Ford and the Volkswagen group. Charging stations with output of up to 350 kW will provide convenient rapid charging along major highways in 18 countries. CEBIT visitors can use virtual reality to dive into the world of eMobility, and admire the futuristic design of the first charging station prototypes (Hall 25, Stand B48).

To prevent emissions, traffic jams and parking headaches, there are plans to supplement urban public transportation systems with shared electric taxis. e.GO Mobile is presenting the e.GO Mover electric minibus and the e.GO Life city car at CEBIT. “The e.GO Mover for 14 passengers is designed for on-demand service and supports highly automated driving,” reported e.Go co-founder Mathias Kreimeier at the Preview (Hall 25, Stand A27).

Deutsche Bahn wants to win over 50 million more passengers to long-distance travel by 2030 – without laying down any new track. At CEBIT, visitors can discover how they plan to do this. Also being introduced at the fair is the smart platform edge that indicates where the doors will be before a train arrives. And the first games in the 2018 World Cup will be broadcast in a public viewing section of a future regional train (Hall 25, Stand A37).

CEBIT has formed a long-term partnership with the ADAC German automobile club. “‘We’re evolving the club from a highway assistance to a mobility assistance service,” says ADAC President Dr. August Markl, “and these changes will be presented at CEBIT.” As the Community Captain for startup platform scale11, the club plays host to young mobility companies. There is also a pitch session for innovative business ideas (Hall 27/scale11 and Hall 25, Stand B27).

Concepts for tomorrow’s working world

It is not just mobility that is changing with breathtaking speed, but also the world of work. AMAGNO is showcasing a revolutionary Living Documents technology at CEBIT, that lets you surf through documents as if they were webpages. By clicking an order number, file reference or name, users can view additional files, scanned documents and e-mails related to any process or case (Hall 14, Stand H20).

The Smart City by Ricoh gives hands-on access to the Workplace 4.0, with space for exciting and inspiring expert keynotes on trending topics in business. The City is featuers seven real-world examples of core aspects of the digitally transformed world of work: data security, digital workflow, mobile solutions, co-working, technological innovations, environmental protection and digitization consulting (Technology Academy, Pavilion 36).

ATOS accompanies the digital transformation of customers from a wide range of industries worldwide. At CEBIT the company shows how a future project manager will do their work, using concrete examples and live demos. Big Data and artificial intelligence are key factors (Hall 13, Stand C74 and open-air site M59).

LG Electronics is displaying its cloud monitors for the first time in Europe. These make it easy to set up quick and convenient workspaces almost anywhere. To give employees access to the necessary data from their company network, the cloud serves as storage to make all programs and services available – as well as additional computing power where needed (Hall 13, Stand D122).

DATEV is using a digital experience pathway to demonstrate at CEBIT what digitization of everyday processes in every company means. Various development stages are also visualized – from founding to successful market entry. Topics include digital bookkeeping, mobile applications for the business environment and eCommerce solutions (Hall 17, Stand F06).

A crash test for web apps and the potential of the blockchain

Ever more work processes are carried out online these days, which means that large volumes of sensitive data must be protected from outside attacks. This is the focus of the startup Crashtest Security, nominated for the CEBIT Innovation Award 2018: The Crashtest Security Suite offers comprehensive security testing for programs in the web (Hall 27, Stand F82).

Of course, cool blockchain startups are also at CEBIT. eCoin Investment has specialized in solutions to easily find your way in the world of cryptocurrencies, and develops high quality mining systems. At CEBIT the company is presenting a selection of its products, showing how to earn money with Bitcoin and its sister currencies, and testing visitors’ crypto-knowledge (Hall 12, Stand B36/1).

Citizen project with blockchain and trends in eGovernment

Promising new concepts also abound in the eGovernment sector. At the Preview, Materna presented its Citizen Blockchain project, planned as a CEBIT Showcase with a fine particulates map. This project will allow people to share data from privately operated air quality measurement stations, and earn blockchain tokens. Municipal partners are still being sought at CEBIT (Hall 15, Stand G54).

The kommune.digital initiative is exhibiting for the first time at CEBIT. Municipal elected officials and other decision-makers can experience new concepts and innovative solutions for tomorrow’s networked cities. Numerous exhibitors are showcasing applications that enable integrated, sustainable digitization (Hall 14, Stand L35).

Augmented & virtual reality for live events of all kinds

The startup VRTX Labs is demonstrating how a visit to CEBIT in 2020 might look, using an augmented & virtual reality app for interactive real-time visualization. In the future, a glance at a smartphone will be enough to call up an explanatory video for an exhibit or hook into the in-hall events program. Real-life experience is enhanced with playful features that invite users to discover the virtual tradeshow world (Hall 27, Stand B23/4).

Influencer marketing trends and entertainment at d!campus

These days many companies want to take advantage of influencers. With CEBIT!signals, Deutsche Messe and blogfoster are presenting Europe’s largest influencer marketing event. More than 1,000 bloggers are expected for Digital Friday (15 June). A program highlight: “From online promotion to YouTube star: How to build a brand with two million followers without investing a penny in advertising” (Keynote with Alexander Giesecke and Nicolai Schork, Managing Directors, TheSimpleCub; Hall 27).

Even a big business festival should include plenty of fun. That’s why, next to the SAP ferris wheel in more than 250 square meters of open-air site, SILPION IT-Solutions is hosting a foosball arena. The goals are fun, relaxation… and networking. Because the new CEBIT on 11–15 June is not just a premium business event, but a festival for everyone!

Experts are already calling blockchain technology the next big thing, with the potential to revolutionize the way we do business. At the upcoming CEBIT (11 to 15 June), participants will reveal the business scenarios that have already become a reality, along with the latest concepts for the future.

Nerds, analysts and economists are all unanimous in rating the blockchain as an economic breakthrough. But what is actually behind the term “blockchain”, and why is this new technology such a game changer for our global economy? Every blockchain is essentially a ledger for a chain of digital transactions. Because all processes are stored in a decentralized, distributed fashion on millions of computers on the Web, the technology is considered highly secure, especially due to the prevention of any retroactive interventions or deletion processes.

Opportunities for automation and enhanced efficiency

The blockchain offers extraordinary opportunities for businesses to automate their processes and boost efficiency. The focus is on mapping business transactions that require the highest degree of confidence, predictability and transparency – from concluding contracts and sharing consumer goods (for example, car sharing) to transacting payments via cryptocurrencies like bitcoin or Ethereum. At the moment, digital currencies that may someday take the place of the so-called fiat currencies are the best-known use cases for the blockchain.

But experts also see a considerable potential for smart contracts – for instance, when renting out properties: If a tenant has transferred his deposit and wants to move in, he could automatically receive a digital key for the electronic lock on the apartment door without the landlord or any other party needing to take any action. The blockchain is also ideally suited for secure data transfer on the Internet of Things or for trading in renewable energies, which are fed into the network by local producers. Completely different areas of application are also conceivable: With texts, images or videos, for example, you can prove the origin and the processing steps if the corresponding data is documented in a blockchain – an effective tool in the battle against fake news.

Practical showcases, courtesy of IBM, Materna, SAP et al.

At Europe’s business festival for innovation and digitization, the blockchain is a key theme which will be highlighted in many different places. For example, at IBM. “In the digital economy, trust is more important than ever,” explains Matthias K. Hartmann, CEO of IBM Germany. “Using the blockchain, we can digitally map, track and exchange almost anything of value – without requiring a centralized control point.”

At CEBIT, IBM will be presenting what it says is the first commercial blockchain platform to be offered in the form of a software-as-a-service solution. To this end, the company is highlighting customer projects from a several different sectors. Working in tandem with logistics provider Maersk, IBM is developing a digital platform for global trade to ensure greater transparency in freight transport across national borders. Interested parties will also learn how other technologies – such as the Internet of Things – can be connected using the blockchain (open-air site, pavilion P34/35).

SAP is also demonstrating the innovative power of the blockchain with a logistics concept – an interactive touchscreen demo illustrating the emergence of a smoothie based on fair trade practices. Linked 3-D elements can be used to follow how the blockchain is revolutionizing digital supply chains. The showcase is intended to illustrate how the origin control system ensures security and increases efficiency (Hall 27, open-air site, pavilion P44).

Materna’s Citizen Blockchain project demonstrates how public administration can benefit from blockchain technology: In the future, citizens will be able to provide data from privately operated air measuring stations in return for digital tokens for a permanently updated fine dust map; these can be managed via app and redeemed online. Materna is looking for municipalities, districts and countries which are interested in participating in the project (Hall 15, Stand G54).

Mach AG (Hall 14, Stand H 58) is also providing information on the blockchain. At the “Future Technologies” camp, CEBIT visitors can witness the potential added value for their organizations which new technologies like augmented reality, artificial intelligence and the blockchain can provide. Special highlights include daily showcases for the use of augmented reality in connection with eFiles or the application of artificial intelligence in the context of document capture. In addition, MACH experts will be encouraging idea-sharing for blockchain use cases, for instance the management of processes and finances in public administration.

A CEBIT showcase at DXC Technology combines the megatrends of robotics and the blockchain: On the open-air site, you can watch a robot at work mixing drinks and receiving orders via a blockchain-based order chain. A marketplace for the monetization of data will also be on display (open-air site, Stand R62).

eCoin Investment specializes in solutions for easy access to the world of cryptocurrencies, including high-quality mining systems for carrying out transactions with bitcoin et al. At CEBIT, the company will present a cross-section of its products while featuring live mining and testing the crypto-knowledge of its visitors (Hall 12, Stand B36/1).

PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) plans to make the emerging Internet of Values directly tangible with its Blockchain Xperience on Friday, 15 June on the Expert Stage in Hall 12, where visitors will get to know how the technology works throughout the day, in one-hour simulations by becoming part of a blockchain themselves.

Also on Friday, 15 June, the CEBIT Blockchain Summit will take place in Hall 12 on the Center Stage, featuring top-class experts. The opening keynote speech will be held by Prof. Wolfgang Prinz, Vice Chairman of Fraunhofer FIT. Further lectures with a number of real-life practical examples will be given by Sebastian Epple, IBM DACH blockchain leader, Dr. Friederike Ernst, Secretary General of the German Blockchain Association, Dinko Eror, General Manager of Dell EMC Germany, Sven Korschinowski, partner of the auditing firm KPMG and consultant for corporations, banks and fintech start-ups, Kaales Lardi, Managing Partner at Lardi & Partner Consulting.

The new CEBIT is Europe’s leading event for startups. And it’s all down to scale11, a highly successful showcase for founders and entrepreneurs. scale11 is a springboard for hip and creative new business ideas from Germany and around the world. Held in Hall 27 this June, it will give more than 350 young enterprises from 40 nations the opportunity to network with market incumbents, investors and other lateral thinkers.

Almost every day, it seems, young entrepreneurs are coming up with innovative ideas with the potential to disrupt classic business models in all kinds of sectors, whether finance, energy, health or retail. And yet, according to a recent industry study, 65 percent of German firms with 20 or more employees still do not have any kind of partnership with startups, and only 8 percent provide capital to startups.

BVDS fostering cooperation between established corporations and startups

To remedy this situation, the German Startups Association (BVDS) – one of the partners of CEBIT’s scale11 platform – recently established the Digital Germany Council (Kuratorium Digitales Deutschland), a body of experts from government, science and business tasked with facilitating and enhancing cooperation between startups, SMEs and global corporations. “One thing we’ve found again and again over the five years we have been operating is that startups are heavily dependent on market incumbents, particularly during their growth phase,” explains BVDS Chairman Florian Nöll. “But we also see the converse – traditional market participants benefitting from the innovative perspective provided by startups.

More and more startups from Germany

The good news is, the number of German startups making a big splash on the market is rising. To quote a recent analysis undertaken for the German government by the country’s Institute for Innovation and Technology (iit): “Successful German startup numbers have now reached a level that is comparable with what is happening in the USA, the UK and Israel.” Moreover, the 2017 German Startup Monitor published by the BVDS shows that 8 out of 10 German startups have plans for international expansion. The focus of these plans is for the most part on other EU countries. The problem is that many of these startups drop out of the running due to a lack of access to capital. To help counter this, the European Commission recently launched VentureEU, a €2.1 billion fund-of-funds program that will back VC funds around Europe and thereby boost support for startups.

CEBIT scale11 a powerful springboard for entrepreneurs

But first things first: startups and scaleups seeking to woo investors, partners and the media need well managed public events to boost their profile. That’s where the CEBIT show’s scale11 platform comes in. It is Europe’s leading springboard for startups hungry for success – and hence also a major magnet for those seeking to share in that success. In Hall 27 at CEBIT, prospective investors and partners will find an absolute wealth of visionary business ideas. For example, the founders of INS will be at this year’s scale11 with the world’s first millimeter-accurate AR-based indoor navigation system that does not require any additional hardware. NEPOS will be presenting the world’s first tablet for the 60-plus generation that features a universal user interface for all programs. EmQopter will be there with an autonomous delivery drone that has a gripper arm and features intelligent collision avoidance technology. And Sensosurf will be showcasing self-learning machine components for industrial processes.

As well as these “German-made” innovations, there will be plenty of brilliant business ideas for other parts of the world. GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation), for instance, will be bringing 20 startups from Kenya, Nigeria and Tunisia to Hannover as part of its Make IT in Africa initiative, and KIC-Europe (Korea Innovation Centre Europe) will be there with seven founder teams from South Korea.

Big players on the look-out for new ideas

CEBIT premium partners ADAC and Volkswagen have announced they will be running startup pitches and many other activities at scale11. Deutsche Bank will also be there. The bank is looking to partner with startups to develop new products and will be using scale11 to present its dbAPI interface, which can be used for developing services such as open banking.

Group pavilions featuring young enterprises

Several startups will be taking part at a group pavilion in Hall 27 organized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). For example, accu:rate will be presenting crowd:it, a software application that uses crowd simulation to improve crowd safety in public places; and rfrnz will be profiling a contract intelligence platform that uses AI to analyze and review contracts.

Several of Germany’s federal states, including Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, will likewise be organizing startup-focused group pavilions in Hall 27. Regional initiatives such as Hannover’s business development agency hannoverimpuls will also be there with a selection of young hopefuls. Other big-name cooperation partners of scale11 include the German venture capital firm High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), the co-working space Hafven Hannover, and the startup incubator and accelerator STARTPLATZ Düsseldorf/Köln.

Expert panels, live action and networking with a festival atmosphere

The show will also feature various other exciting startup-centric events and formats, including the scale11 startup stage with its live pitches, as well as various panel discussions, community areas and business speed-dating sessions. For example, on the Expert Stage, the BVDS will be running information and discussion events starring noted representatives from the startup scene, influencers, investors and political leaders.

One of the big scale11 highlights for startups will be the Meet-a-Media sessions. Run as 30-minute speed-dating slots, these sessions are an opportunity for startups to chat with journalists and get first-hand advice on how to improve their media presence (cooperation partner: Becomewide). And for young women entrepreneurs, there’s the Founders’ Breakfast in the scale11 Lounge on 13 June.

scale11 would not be scale11 without the ever-popular “Fuckup Nights”. Held on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 June, these are an opportunity for young entrepreneurs to talk about their failures and the reasons for them and to give other budding entrepreneurs a few pointers on how to deal with difficult situations.

And for those entrepreneurs who feel equal to a public duel of words with their peers, there’s the Founders Fight Club. Each round will be scored by a jury of experts. Every evening, once the Fights and other scale11 activities are over, it’s time to head out to the d!campus for some R&R amid a relaxing festival atmosphere.

Promising startups as finalists for CEBIT Innovation Award

Three highly promising startups have been nominated for the CEBIT Innovation Award 2018. They are: AIPARK, which uses big traffic data and AI to help drivers find parking spaces; Crashtest Security, which has developed a suite of web application security software; and Fire & Rescue Instructions, whose DIVERA 24/7 real-time visualization software streamlines emergency response planning for fire and rescue services. The three finalists will be at the German Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF) pavilion at Stand E52 in Hall 27.

Making the benefits of digitalization tangible – that was the declared objective of HANNOVER MESSE 2017. After five action-packed days at the world’s leading trade fair for industrial technology, the organizers spoke of a thriving event. A large number of solution-seekers gathered in Hannover to immerse themselves in the potential of intelligent robots, adaptive machines and integrated energy systems, taking attendance to new heights.

Hannover, Germany. “More attendees, more solutions, more international – that aptly sums up HANNOVER MESSE 2017,” commented Dr. Jochen Köckler, Member of the Managing Board at Deutsche Messe. “Over the past five days, Hannover has served as a global hub for all things related to Industrie 4.0. Every sector involved in the digitalization of industry was on hand to showcase its answers to the key question faced by industrial enterprises everywhere: How can I best get my company into shape for the digital future? HANNOVER MESSE has resoundingly underscored its value as a prime source of orientation for decision-makers from around the globe,” he added. The show’s chosen lead theme of“Integrated Industry – Creating Value” put a major spotlight on the benefits of Industrie 4.0 and the role of humans in tomorrow’s integrated factories. As this year’s featured Partner Country, Poland called added attention to the need for close cooperation throughout Europe, while impressing attending professionals with its credentials as an innovative partner to global industry.

In his summation of the event, Thilo Brodtmann, Managing Director of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), said: “HANNOVER MESSE 2017 has served as an unsurpassed showcase for the mechanical engineering sector. Industrie 4.0 is now well past the trial stage, and is already generating real benefits in application. The show clearly reflected the industry’s buoyant mood – a mood powered by having exactly what it takes to get the job done for the benefit of people everywhere. And when it comes to international competition, we are definitely among the frontrunners. In short, HANNOVER MESSE 2017 has been nothing short of outstanding.”

Dr. Klaus Mittelbach, CEO of the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (ZVEI), remarked: “Industrie 4.0 is booming, and Hannover Messe has been promoting the topic from the very start. Moreover, the fair has made it amply clear that digitalization calls for a European identity. The pressing task at hand is to build the digital union at top speed.”

Of the show’s 225,000 attendees (up from 217,000 in 2015 as the most recent comparable event), more than 75,000 came from abroad. “This is an unprecedented figure in the 70-year history of HANNOVER MESSE,” commented Köckler, adding: “This impressively proves that decision-makers from around the world rely on HANNOVER MESSE as their definitive source of Industrie 4.0 orientation and solutions.” The largest number of foreign visitors came from China (9,000), followed by the Netherlands (6,200), India (5,300) and Poland, whose 5,000 visitors set a new Partner Country record. The long-term impact of Partner Country participation was underscored by an impressive 3,000 visitors from the U.S. as last year’s Partner Country.

“In close collaboration with our exhibitors, we succeeded in making this year’s lead theme tangible in the truest sense of the word,” remarked Köckler. “With an array of more than 500 application scenarios, the show gave real shape to the promise that digitalization holds for industry and the energy sector.”

Triumph of the cobots

A new generation of robots was also in the limelight: the so-called “cobots”, i.e. collaborative robots, which are about to fundamentally transform the way we work in factories. Their connectivity, artificial intelligence, innovative sensors and intuitive operation allow them to communicate directly with humans, as they learn autonomously and swap instructions with other cobots. As Köckler pointed out: “There was huge interest in the displays in the robotics halls. Not only are cobots an exciting prospect for large companies – many SMEs were also at HANNOVER MESSE to find out about these new helpers for their manufacturing operations.”

From sensors to platforms

Previously sensors were viewed as the main technology item connecting up different machines, but this year’s event put platform solutions to the fore. Concretely, this refers to cloud-based network connections for the entire production operations, including data collection and analysis. “The trend towards the ‘digital twin’ concept in the production environment is opening up entirely new vistas for industry,” reported Köckler. If testing can be carried out in virtual reality – for example, to see whether a new production line is going to work out – this makes it possible to bring products onto the market faster, at lower cost.

Energy systems of the future

Exhibitors in the energy halls showed how the energy systems of the future might well operate. According to Köckler, “ourIntegrated Energy Plaza created a central hub for the energy industry. The exhibits showed how the revolution in power generation can segue into a true energy transition, including the heat and mobility markets.” The main focus was on new energy storage technologies, which included serial production-ready electrolysis stacks, making hydrogen solutions a viable alternative even today. Some totally new approaches were also in evidence in the solar technology area, with several companies displaying ultra-thin, flexible solar foils that generate electricity even in low-light conditions, opening up new options for the practical application of the technology.

SMEs gearing up for digitalization

With almost every passing week, another consultant study is published with dire warnings that SMEs are not ready for digitalization. “HANNOVER MESSE 2017 has told a different story,” said Köckler, pointing to the numerous component supplier companies exhibiting at HANNOVER MESSE. “These companies are now digitalizing their processes and establishing connectivity with their partners, because they know that their customers – from the automotive industry, for example – expect the end-to-end digital tracking of each and every part every component.” Another example consisted of Salzgitter AG, which presented a coordinated display at HANNOVER MESSE underscoring how Industrie 4.0 and digitalization have changed the way they see their business, and the solutions that are already in place.

Growth in the startup segment

Following on the heels of last year’s successful launch, the “Young Tech Enterprises” segment of the fair enabled young businesses to introduce themselves to potential investors, customers and partners. More than 150 startups were on hand, exhibiting storage devices for renewable energy networks, operating systems for augmented reality and mini-wind power plants for cars and trains: “The startup area of the fair is going from strength to strength. We are confident that many of them will decide to take the plunge next year with their own stand at HANNOVER MESSE,” added Köckler.

Partner Country Poland

Featured as this year’s Partner Country, Poland sent a total of 200 companies to Hannover, highlighting the country’s strong credentials as a dynamic and innovative industrial location. Research and startups are a special priority for the Partner Country. This was the message conveyed by Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo in her address at the HANNOVER MESSE Opening Ceremony, and these themes were also at the forefront of the exhibits during the event. Poland also succeeded in underscoring its leading position in eMobility. The high degree of interest in HANNOVER MESSE among Polish political circles was confirmed by the presence of such high-ranking delegates as Jarosław Adam Gowin, Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education, and Mateusz Morawiecki, Minister of Economic Development and Finance.

HANNOVER MESSE 2018 features CeMAT and IAMD

Beginning in 2018, the annual Industrial Automation (IA) show will merge with the biennial Motion, Drive & Automation (MDA) – both representing leading fairs staged under the HANNOVER MESSE umbrella. IA and MDA will then take place jointly under the new name of “Integrated Automation, Motion & Drives” (IAMD) – reflecting the entire spectrum of industrial automation, power transmission and fluid power at HANNOVER MESSE.

Beginning in 2018, CeMAT, the world’s leading intralogistics trade fair, will be staged every two years in parallel with HANNOVER MESSE. “Production and logistics processes are in the process of becoming intelligently integrated, enabling even more efficient, flexible production processes. At CeMAT we will be making this integration tangible and will demonstrate the resulting potential,” said Köckler. Additional display sectors at CeMAT include logistics solutions for retailing and logistics services. “Efficient logistics processes are of critical importance to the business success of online retailers or bricks-and-mortar retailers. At CeMAT they’ll find the right logistics systems for omni or cross-channel solutions,” reported Köckler.

CeMAT and HANNOVER MESSE will be a strong duo next year, providing a unique platform for international decision-makers from industry and logistics.

The next HANNOVER MESSE will run from 23 to 27 April 2018, with Mexico as its official Partner Country.

CeBIT 2017 drew to a close today in Hannover, after five action-packed days. Like never before, this year”s event tangibly conveyed the potential of digitalization and how best to achieve it. More than 3,000 exhibitors from 70 nations showcased their innovations for the digital transformation of the economy and society, under the lead theme of “d!conomy – no limits”.

As this year’s Partner Country, Japan made a major impact right from the start. Another highlight was the announcement that, from 2018 on, CeBIT will be staged in a new June timeslot recasting it as Europe’s leading “events platform” for digital transformation.

Hannover. CeBIT 2017 drew to a successful close on Friday. “With live displays offering tangible insight into the potential of, and best strategies for achieving digitalization, plus Japan as an outstandingly innovative Partner Country and superlative coverage of all of the industry’s hottest topics, CeBIT 2017 has ticked all the right boxes. The impressive performance of CeBIT 2017 gives us lots of tailwind for the unveiling of the new-look CeBIT in June 2018,” remarked Oliver Frese, the Deutsche Messe Managing Board member responsible for CeBIT, at the press wrap-up in Hannover on Friday.

“The show got off to a brilliant start at the Welcome Night ceremony staged on the exhibition grounds with participation by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and the same upbeat vibe was felt throughout the halls in the days that followed,” commented Frese. The over 200,000 visitors in attendance were particularly impressed with Japan’s showcase as the event’s official Partner Country. With a huge lineup of 120 companies in two halls, Japan set a new record. “Japan demonstrated it has already taken major strides on its way to entering the digital age,” said Frese, adding that the nation’s highlighting of its “Society 5.0” initiative provided rich insight into the transformative power of digitalization and the shape of things to come in business and society. “The program’s all-encompassing approach embraces every aspect of the economy and society, and the debate it sparked met with keen interest on the part of CeBIT visitors,” remarked Frese, adding: “As such, our Partner Country provided major impetus for the new-look CeBIT, where players form the realms of business, government and society at large will be getting together to illuminate and explore every conceivable aspect of digital transformation.”

On Wednesday, Deutsche Messe had announced a completely new concept for CeBIT 2018 and beyond. Next year’s show will be staged from June 11 to 15, featuring three main segments – “d!conomy”“d!tec” and “d!talk” – in the halls surrounding the iconic wooden EXPO Canopy serving as the heart of the central “d!campus”. The d!conomy showcase will be a lead-generating machine, where digital solution providers and their commercial and public-sector customers get down to business. Disruptive technologies, research institutes and startups will be on front and center stage at the new technology festival called d!tec. And, last but not least, the d!talk program will offer rich opportunities for dialogue, debate and knowledge-sharing in a series of conferences, workshops and keynotes held at various locations throughout the grounds.

Frese referred to the mood at the show as upbeat, and noted that the new CeBIT concept had met with a unanimously positive response. “The reinvented CeBIT is already sparking lots of fresh new ideas on all sides, with more of them rolling in by the minute. We will be teaming up with our exhibitors to leverage this tremendous opportunity to recreate CeBIT as a festival of innovations and ‘digitalization made tangible’.”
